There is so much joy in developing the question, designing the study, and writing it up. There is also frustration and joy in responding to reviewers. I would actually be devastated to lose that.
3. I appealed to the joy of doing science—and got the predictable question:

Would you rather live in a world where AI cured cancer or live in a world where you personally get to do science?

But that's not the dilemma we face at all. There's no cause to think that AI could do anything of the sort.

1. In Hamburg there is a "fully autonomous train" that for some reason has a human operator to press the ON switch first thing in the morning and the OFF switch at the end of the night. In a recent talk about AI in science, I asked the audience to consider whether they want to be like that operator.
All aboard except the driver? A fully autonomous train takes to the tracks in Germany

My quote of the day

Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power.

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore

I've had to plan cross-border moves, getting into grad school, dealing with layoffs, 800-page immigration applications, reported features, international adventure trips, solo-backpacking nine countries, learning languages, and how to train my dog. I don't have time or energy for men who can't plan.

Trump's second term eviscerated regulatory autonomy. They even randomly fired Democratic commissioners.

This corruption WILL kill people and cause generational public harm, but it continues to receive less attention in the press than whatever brainfart Sam Altman has each morning
NEW: SCOTUS will hear arguments Monday on Trump’s attempt to fire the last Democratic FTC commissioner. A ruling for the president could dangerously expand his control over agencies regulating the economy, stock market, campaign finance and communications.

For months, have been getting the question: why does Trump let RFK Jr get away with [shocking public health decision]?

The answer is that the two men are kindred spirits on many of these issues — including and especially vaccines.
Why is Trump letting RFK Jr dismantle agencies and upend public health?

Shared grievances and skepticism about vaccines, a growing personal bond — and a belief that it’s good politics.
