don't let your sadness become despair and don't let your righteous anger become interpersonal nastiness, I've been seeing both a lot lately and we're going to need to avoid these if we want to have any hope of building a future for America rooted in love and justice instead of cruelty and cynicism.

lol last night was a rerun
“NBC's Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage…”

see once you try this once and it fails the subsequent attempts just look impotent and clueless
FCC Chair Brendan Carr just shared a Truth Social post from Trump calling for Seth Meyers to be fired

this take gets annoying as a southerner. you should not give up on the south, but no, it is not red because of voter suppression or a lack of funding for dems. doug jones raised shitloads of money and lost. it is red because the overwhelming majority are extremely racist white conservatives
I understand why a lot of white liberals are like, fuck the south, because they think about the people in power who are mostly white conservatives. But that is only because of Jim Crow, voter suppression, a lack of real funding for Dems there

People want to believe that the GOP’s electoral success in red states is the result of dirty tricks and gerrymandering instead of the sincerely held beliefs of a majority of the population because a mechanical issue is easier to fix than wrestling with how to make people not believe what they do.

Spiers is desperate to believe that some amount of deliverism or investment could redeem the South when absent massive population shifts in urban centers the only thing that got like six consecutive generations of southern whites to vote for non-white politicians/Democrats was military occupation.

One of my favorite genres of article is "professional writer has a kid, is forced to watch ten thousand hours of Paw Patrol, goes insane, and writes a lengthy diatribe indicting it". We used to get one every six months, regular as clockwork.
this is also how i feel about that show with the dogs i refused to watch when i was dating a woman with a toddler

i hate the detestable cop dog, of course, but also it has insane fucked up gender politics and instead i got the kid on eating olives and watching how it's made

man we need a way to say "the moral rot and depravity of this country's elite must be burned out of it with cleansing fire" that isn't wildly reactionary-coded

Imagine the political theater the Dems could be doing now if they hadn’t caved. They could be demanding an impeachment vote as a condition of ending the shutdown
Trump just told reporters on Air Force One that he hasn’t ruled out a pardon for Ghislane Maxwell

My basic problem with abolitionism is that it transform what is a political problem—police depts run against the interest of the communities they police—into a metaphysical problem

even though I rationally have come to expect it it never ceases to be shocking how readily and sloppily major financial institutions will abet fraud to swipe a couple grand from a person in poverty struggling to keep a roof over their head

if rich people with good credit got dragged into the consumer debt courts for letting their balance stay too high or missing a few payments on accident, Capital One, Citibank, Wells Fargo, and most major auto loan servicers would end up nationalized within a decade

On the very rare occasions rich people get sucked into the child welfare system, they genuinely can’t believe how it works.

I knew the son of a doctor living in the suburbs, who went to a good private school, who started hanging out with a gang and is now in prison for a long time for being the driver in a drive-by.

policy by anecdote is bad but I don’t believe material needs are the *only* reason people commit crimes
first of all, i don't know much about abolitionism, i'm just calling out a lack of imagination. however, i can give a couple thoughts off the top of my head.

most deviance will be eliminated by the elimination of material need and the flattening of hierarchies.

please don't go looking for this person to harass them but i feel a need to point out that it's not actually a dunk if you can't get the ball into the net, it's just a complaint that someone has pointed out you might be wrong about something

This has become a very salient dimension of our politics: do you think designing institutions is hard or do you think that everyone who came before you is just evil? If the only problem with progressive era mental hospitals is those people were bad and you are good, it's fine to recreate them

at this point, Los Angeles is the most NIMBY city in the country.

I am not a socialist myself, but give me a socialist YIMBY like Zohran or Katie Wilson over a liberal NIMBY like Karen Bass any day of the week.
After failing to stop a major state housing bill from becoming law, Los Angeles leaders are turning to plan B: Delaying Senate Bill 79's implementation and pushing for unspecified legislative changes next year. My dispatch for @politico.com Pro subscribers subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2025...
POLITICO Pro: Los Angeles failed to defeat a major housing law, so it's turning to Plan B: Delay, delay, delay
A report from the city planning department outlines strategies for pushing off many of the effects of SB 79 through 2030.

very cool system, but it’s always seemed a bizarre choice that the rem is not identified as part of the metro system, even moreso now that it’s expanded. i know that rem is legally, technically its own thing but come on: it’s really just more metro!
the biggest section of the REM (and imo the most important phase) opened today, basically extending a highway-median suburban branch into a full-fledged 50 km north-south metro across the montreal region

montreal now has a 119-kilometre metro system with 87 stations, by far the largest in canada!

So I have a solution for this, it would involve land transfers, land rents and giving back key beach front , government land and high end real estate back to native people, as well as mining and resource rites in key areas for 500 years as a form of long term compensation
I'm gonna be honest, I kinda feel the same way about decolonialist discourse. When you ask for a concrete set of actions to take in pursuit of decolonization in the 21st century, half the time you get ethnic cleansing but woke.
