...and they did wait until the last week of january!

as rumoured for many months, line 5 is finally publicly confirmed to be opening february 8.

that's less than 2 weeks away. similar to line 6, the opening date has been shrouded in secrecy until the very end, with not even an estimate provided.

Objectively good news! But we need:

We need a public inquiry to make sure future transit projects don’t face the same issues.

Assurances from Metrolinx and Crosslinx that it won’t have the same problems as Line 6.

Signal priority ASAP.

We need it to work.

Eglinton Crosstown LRT opening on Feb. 8, TTC reportedly tells Doug Ford
Construction on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which will operate as Line 5 Eglinton, began in 2011. It was supposed to be done in 2020.

50+ cm (~20 in) of snow just fell in toronto.

really happy that the city has *already* cleared the sidewalk & bus stop and plowed an accessible curb so people can board.

last year, at this time of year, myself and neighbours would be stumbling over snow mountains to board the bus for days 😮‍💨

dozens of ice killings of black and brown people in the past months & years glazed over by mainstream media & wasn't enough to nudge the "opposition" party to grow a spine

not to mention many more who are missing in custody and likely dead, but not even counted.

disgusting, but also not surprising

a little piece of good news:

line 6 is surprisingly still up and running despite the latest snowstorm. it hasn't seemed to encounter a service issue for the last 12+ hours

We are calling our senators right now and demanding that they vote no on the omnibus with DHS funding

We are explicitly mentioning ICE’s murder in cold blood of a man on the streets of Minneapolis this morning

Line 5 Eglinton: No service between Hakimi Lebovic and Kennedy stations while we work on signal issues. Shuttle buses are on the way.

the exact same arguments i heard against bus lanes in toronto repeat themselves in vancouver:

✅ "i want better transit, BUT..."

✅ "businesses die without street parking" (despite an abundance of off street parking)

✅ bus lane turns car sewer into an "unsafe highway"

✅ "accessibility worsens"

i remember a decade ago when conservatives would exclaim how there was no point in canada weaning off fossil fuels when china would just pollute more.

china transformed towards sustainability while canada doubled down on oil & mining, and canadian liberals adopted former conservative talking points
A decade ago if someone from the future came to tell me that at the 2026 WEF in Davos *China* would be leading the charge on climate, and the US would be bolstering fossil fuels and stymying green energy development, I would have not believed them. Yet here we are...

the four busiest bus routes in metro vancouver (99, R4, 49, 25) are all parallel crosstown routes to UBC

really makes the case for broadway subway, but i wonder why translink isn't pursuing BRT on their busiest rapid (R4) or the 49. will the subway really soak up that much citywide E-W demand?

the TTC reusing the same marketing and branding from line 6 to line 5 is so iconic. not fixating on the lack of creativity (I like the design), but quite a choice given how bad an impression line 6 has had.

nonetheless, that this page is up is a good sign for the unannounced february opening date!

new york is cutting congestion, cleaning the air, speeding up transit, and funding subway accessibility and signalling upgrades + bus service increases across the boroughs with congestion pricing.

it's time for more cities to adopt this bold policy.

it's slow, it's kinda bunched, but at least it works.

somehow line 6 (which has been completely or partially shut down for the past 2 days over snow issues) is making me grateful for the streetcar leg of my commute

Line 6 seemingly doesn't work in the snow!

While Metrolinx, the TTC, and the private consortium of companies point fingers at each other over issues with Line 6, riders are left with unreliable and broken transit.

We need a public inquiry into Line 6 and other provincial P3 transit projects!

i appreciate that the executive order for bus lanes is to "design and build", not "study, consult to death, and produce feasibility reports".

that's how it ought to be. dedicated transit lanes for congested, high ridership transit routes are a no-brainer.

toronto, take note from seattle!
Excited to announce 2 executive orders at my transition team meeting. My Shelter and Housing Accelerator order will speed efforts to rapidly bring people inside. And my Transit Accelerator order will finally implement a bus lane on Denny. More details on my blog at wilson.seattle.gov #thisisyourcity

Toronto is proposing $132.5M over 10 years for cycling infrastructure.

That's down from $175M in last year's budget and $289M (!!) in 2024.

Meanwhile Montreal is planning to spend $473.5M.

Cities make choices.

always fascinating that NYC has commuter/regional trains and subways with the same transit agency logo slapped on them, yet are operated as if they were two separate entities without common flat-fare integration within city limits.

an unnecessary 2-tiered system segregated by affluence. good read!
1) Integrate commuter rail fares.

30-min bus trips for $0 are nice…

30-min train trips to Manhattan for $1.50 (Fair Fares) is better than 70-min bus-and-subway trips.

60-min (or less) Queens↔️Bronx trips by blazing fast commuter rail for $1.50? Game-changer.

I don't think we've discussed "hybrid mass timber" construction - metal-framed walls with mass timber decks. This new technique could replace wood-framed and concrete alike for residential projects between 4 and 11+ stories, with big climate and cost advantages.

less than 20% of torontonians think the new line 6 LRT is successful. can anecdotally say it's pretty accurate and perhaps even generously high given what i've heard from locals along this line these past two months
January 15, 2026 at 8:05 PM
toronto's newest subway trains have renderings and they look better than ever. world class. i look forward to seeing what interior improvements riders will get out of these.

hopefully no one says anything about how our "subways and LRTs must be painted gray to indicate they are rapid transit"
