hopefully it stays true that there isn't any private company willing to invest in such a pipeline. then this whole project can be finally laid to rest

can't fit in a 2-min video how important and unique BC's north coast ecosystems and forests are, and how unsuitable the strait is for shipping oil.

coastal first nations has an email petition to uphold the oil tanker ban (which prevents any pipeline):

it was a top-3 regional priority that was also the easiest of the 3 to do. it makes total sense to build it.

to upgrade the commuter line to add branches to the airport, south shore, and importantly, to add two new underground stations to connect to the metro would have costed billions more.

only other line with a similar ridership impact and regional priority as the REM is the east blue line (which is already happening, so irrelevant) and the eastern REM line, stalled by nimbyism.

i don't see why they need to wait. the OL is overcrowded & the south shore needed another rail crossing.

trains would inevitably have to slow down for crossovers but it shouldn't be THIS slow. it's poorly designed!
November 29, 2025 at 6:55 PM
as for one thing they could've done in this case - get rid of the traffic signal, or extend the portal to be west of romfield lane, where there's a large clearing without any signalized intersections. then put the crossover on the surface, since that's cheaper and probably allows higher speeds.

it's faster in some periods and slower in others, but overall it's not great. i hope it's at least more consistent than the bus, but we'll see.
if you want to know why toronto's new light rail line is going to be slower than the bus it replaces, here's one reason why:
finch west LRT is currently being tested ahead of opening. like its counterpart, the eglinton crosstown, it's stuck behind left-turning traffic.

note the transit signal showing red while lines of left turning cars advance.

40,000 people are projected to use this line daily when it opens.

here's another reason. for some they put a crossover at the bottom of the tunnel portal right beyond a traffic light and then speed-restricted the entire approach.

there's other slow zones in other parts of the line.

so many bad decisions.

we deserve sooo much better than this.
painful to see slow zones on the finch west LRT before it even opens. this portal has been speed limited to 10 km/h.

thanks to unplanned slow zones and weak, passive signal priority, trains are taking longer to complete trips, and gaps are wider.

multiple cases of 12-15 min waits on line 6 😒😒

toronto does not know how to build a good surface tramway. pretty wild for a city that should be an expert on operating street running rail given the system, but clearly that holds no bearing when we also have the slowest streetcar system in the world
November 29, 2025 at 6:35 PM
running trains for a thousand years and under the same operations regime isn't normal and if your transit system is known for that, it's because of austerity and a lack of willingness to fund public transit. and that's a bad thing!

newer & better transit attracts more riders - REM will do that

the biggest single expansion is on kingston road in scarborough.

cycle toronto needs people to speak up at city hall for bike lanes, so if you ride a bike or care about safer streets, show up:
WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK UP AT COMMITTEE.

Come out to our public speaking training workshop on Dec 2 to learn how to craft your personal message ahead of committee.
