gotta admit, "no we're losers" is definitely an accurate assessment of the situation
Asked if he's willing to shut down the government over ICE funding, Senator Cory Booker replies: "We had the longest government shutdown, and Democrats could not hold together to sustain that kind of pressure."

Hobbes votes Tiger Party, straight ticket, and has Opinions about first-past-the-post systems
Just a reminder that you've never seen a Calvin & Hobbes animated movie or cartoon is because Bill Watterson didn't want to give Hobbes a voice so he could always live inside your head exactly the way you imagined him. And to this day you have no idea who he ever has voted for. But you can guess.

On the advice of my husband I have just started reading my very first @guygavrielkay.bsky.social novel, The Summer Tree. As someone who attended the Faculty of Music every day for seven years, reading a scene taking place on Philosopher's Walk is delightful and jarring at the same time.

For a long time, most newspaper comics were Bad, Actually, with a few outliers (PEANUTS, DOONESBURY, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, the first decade or so of CATHY, THE FAR SIDE). Then we got a renaissance of exceptionally clever strips all at the same time in the 90s, just before newspaper revenues collapsed
why did so many millennials read so many newspaper comics? easily 60 percent of my reading diet in elementary/middle school was collected editions of calvin and hobbes, farside, dilbert, peanuts, doonesbury (!), foxtrot (?!?) and i know im not alone. historically unique phenomenon
rather than talk about Scott Adams I want to talk about something weirder (me). Who else was really into Dilbert when you were 12. Who else was like, boy, I can't wait to work a cubicle job

funny thing about pinball is that if you know pinball, like I mean at all, you know that The Addams Family pinball machine (1990) is *universally agreed* to be the best pinball machine ever made. like there are no outliers here arguing for anything else. it's just the ultimate expression of the form
my husband came to me last summer. he said,”I’ve been trying to find a good Addams Family pinball machine for you for four years. Last summer we played the Jaws machine and you said it was the best game you’d played since Addams Family. What if we just fucking bought that?”
I woulda gone with Addams Family but Jaws is a banger of a board.

many commercial jets have been blown out of the sky because they were believed to be covert military aircraft. Secretary Hegseth just gave every SAM site on the planet an excuse to take pot shots at any 737s they think are suspicious, and now we’re all less safe
perfidy (concealing a military object as a civilian object like Hegseth apparently did) is both morally abhorrent and also puts EVERYONE in danger because it erodes existing and pretty-dang-effective norms around “don’t shoot at civilian aircraft.”

As someone who was paying attention to Doug Ford long before it was cool: no. Ford isn't a sex creep type and he doesn't have Trump's pedo tendencies. He just prefers blondes, which is the most basic thing there is. He married a blonde and IS blond, so he has blonde daughters. That's it.
Ford shares this kink with Trump.

Kinga looks exactly like his daughters.

Anyone seen photos of Kinga and Doug's baby?

at a certain point someone really needs to point out, when they say this, that "Greenland will be acquired or taken over by China or Russia" is insanely stupid
Leavitt: "The president was very clear last night. He said he wants to the US acquire Greenland because he feels that if we do not, then it will eventually be acquired or perhaps even hostilely taken over by China or Russia. Perhaps it would be in the best interest of Greenland to be part of the US"

There really is a book to be written about how we went from withering public outrage at Ford's decision to accept Pinto deaths as the cost of doing business to a general shrug when EPA does this. It's the same damn thing, just at scale.

first season of live-action ONE PIECE was, despite everything you expect from live-action anime adaptations and Netflix generally, really quite fun, and the fact that season 2 will, in fact, introduce Tony Tony Chopper is just further proof that they understand the point of it all is sheer insanity
