Willa has a false image of her mom as a hero. she then learns that her mother may have been “bad,” and finally she arrives at a nuanced view of her mom as someone to look up to for her aspirations if not the actual things she did.

i agree it’s critical, but i also think the story is one about aging and passing batons, and in that context the ego of youth is understandable and sympathetic to a point. Question is what we take away from that complex humanity. What’s gifted from it to the next generation.

what you get is a character who does a lot of things and makes a whole lot of decisions based on circumstances we’re given enough info to make assumptions about, but never enough for total clarity

this is done most literally when we don’t get to see the reason she first shoots the guard

just saw OBAA for the second time. lost nothing from the first viewing. remain convinced ppl who say it doesn’t have clear or coherent politics are showing their ass. (hint: look to sensei - he is the movie’s brain and embodies a truly moral revolutionary, as opposed to perfidia’s ego tripping)
