Hamnet not quite the same physical ordeal of sobbing the second time through, but equally moving all the same. i get why it rubs people wrong, and there are spots i might’ve advised some toning down, but it’s a beautiful, earthy, generous movie.

a formative memory is Death Wish III airing on the movie channel and my dad getting excited and saying, "You've gotta watch this with me," and halfway through he's like, "The message of this movie is really evil, eh?"

something that occurs to me: i'm taking my mom to see Hamnet tomorrow, and she would not have seen any of the recent movies or TV shows that use On the Nature of Daylight, so it's unlikely to be distracting
imo, Hamnet is sincerely animated by questions about the fickle qualities of mortality and the different ways people express pain, and its style plays with those polarities, smashing them together until they're finally able to merge productively

sucks that it happens with a distracting music choice

thing about Hamnet is it plays like an older style of Oscar-bait tearjerker, but i kinda like old Oscar-bait tearjerkers, sometimes i need someone to force a good, cathartic cry session out of me

i'm pro-Hamnet, but there is no question in my mind that Zhao should have realized using On the Nature of Daylight was a mistake. even Richter was against it. the kind of boneheaded move that she had plenty of time to correct, even after its festival premieres. someone should've forced the issue.
