One thing that’s sort of weird is that there is an actual no-shit ground war in Europe with a relatively clear morally right side, a tiny nation fighting off an imperialist aggressor, but they keep the settings of these things stuck in ripped-from-the-headlines-of-2015-as-understood-by-subliterate

the first couple games are like about the recruitment commercial versions of the US/UK military. I geniunely don’t think the people who wrote the later ones even know what the military is, on like a conceptual level. They’re marvel movies with soldier-man, and that’s sort of an insult to Marvel

The mainline call of duty games have been somehow even worse in terms of plot. Like what started as a sort of dumb but coherent and relatively well executed Michael Bay movie getting a serious of increasingly severe TBIs.

It’s a shame because I actually really liked the “wilderness of mirrors on acid” vibe. I remember pausing during the briefing scenes and reading all the intel documents. But gamers want the next franchise entry to be bigger and better means there’s never any subtlety in later ones.

Blops games one of the worst cases of flanderization ever. First had an actually sort of clever/subversive (for call of duty) unreliable narrator twist where it’s implied lots of the action hero shit didn‘t actually happen. So now you always you headshot some character’s superego with an M4.
Basically the plot is that Evil PMC OpenAI uses an AI Deepfake of Raul Menendez from Black Ops 2 to sow chaos by planning to blame him for terrorist attacks they're planning to commit using an hallucinogenic Rage Virus to sell more AI defense slop as the solution.

Apparently the new Call of Duty is bad and I’m honestly confused as to how this happened because it sounds like bungling Madden or FIFA. You’re an army man with a gun. You shoot the army men with guns who have the audacity to be from somewhere else. The rules worked fine in 2004 and haven’t changed.
