Nativism was political suicide in Illinois, which had a large immigrant population. But Lincoln genuinely despised the Know-Nothings and their ilk. He wasn’t above adhering to some of the cruder stereotypes of immigrants, especially the Irish, but he never suggested stopping immigration.
Lincoln himself had a fair amount to say about immigration, and he was both unabashedly for it and scathing in his denunciations of nativists as, more or less, idiots.
