Found out that the American Toby Jug Museum in Evanston permanently closed earlier this year, which is a shame. One of those great little museums that comes from somebody who is intent on sharing their personal hobby with others, and who has the time, resources, and space to do so.
The American Toby Jug Museum in Evanston is closing. What does one do with 8,500 Toby jugs?
Founder Stephen Mullins’ collection outgrew his house so he created a museum. There are jugs of presidents, of “Star Wars” characters, there are glass cases filled with them. But …

This is my favorite piece on the Zero Units, the Afghan locals who actually fought the war under the direction of the CIA.
The Evacuation of the CIA’s Afghan Proxies Has Opened One of the War’s Blackest Boxes
Afghan Zero Units hold clues to many of the war’s mysteries, including how the CIA engineered deadly night raids that contributed to the Taliban’s victory.

Hate to be posting this on a holiday, but there's been renewed interest in the CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan. Here's a good summary of @propublica.org's 2022 reporting on the units and just some of the civilian casualties they were responsible for:
What We Know About U.S.-Backed Zero Units in Afghanistan
Deadly night raids. Faulty U.S. intelligence. A “classified” war loophole. Reporter Lynzy Billing’s investigation offers an unprecedented insight into the civilian casualties of Afghanistan’s Zero Uni...

To put this in context, I was offered a teaching track job in 2023 that had a salary of $55,000.
It's impossible to overstate how horrendous this feels to most academics in the US, esp those working at state unis. Higher ed is busy slashing humanities programs allegedly b/c of a lack of popularity (tho they tend to make $$) while paying football coaches US$53 million not to work there

happy thanksgiving to you too
80 people about to get proselytized when all they want is a good Thanksgiving meal.

So sad how folks insist on polluting charity works with their religion.
