Composer & instrument-maker Walter Smetak (b. 1913 in Switzerland of Czech origin) was very influential on Tropicália music, esp. the Baianos (Bahia-born) Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso, & Gilberto Gil, as well as UAKTI (from Minas Gerais). Smetak migrated to 🇧🇷 in 1938 & taught in Bahia 1957-1984.

Lastly, i went to a benefit for him less than 2 months before he died @ the Musicians' Union in LA. Higgins was too weak to play, but everyone seemed to play that day: Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, Kenny Burrell, Teddy Edwards, Charles McPherson, Harold Land, & many more. A beautiful day of music.

First saw Tom Zé perform @ Lincoln Center in 2011. At one point he sang from the telephone book. After the show he greeted everyone who waited in line for a signature w. a big smile & a warm hug.
