This piece is important. It is also a great (annoyingly great) example of what a properly resourced team of journalists can do. There are five bylines and almost 20 additional reporting credits on this piece. I've wanted to write this story for months but... do not have that many colleagues
The cost of Trump's immigration surge: Stalled investigations into child sexual abuse, Iranian oil smuggling and human trafficking, among others. My latest piece is a big team effort on how DHS has been transformed into the Department of Deportation.

Why are OpenAI’s creative writing abilities not great? Well they’re made by people who can’t articulate an original thought and ambush real writers at cons to rehash seventy year old Asimov stories

Very persuasive. Worth underlining that there are trade-offs. If your goal is to "improve the writing," but also "keep this accessible to the widest possible audience, and don't advocate any specific perspective," you are pulling and pushing on the same lever. Humans can't both pull & push either.

i have read a good chunk of jeff bezos' writing over the years and somehow this end to the wapo editorial makes me think that he actually wrote the entire thing personally. it has jeff bezos writing vibe.
Oh, and don't forget the gratuitous shot at queer and trans communities at the very end of this screed:

The indictment failing because of reasons you couldn't possibly think of.
MORE: The magistrate said an FBI agent who may have viewed Comey's privileged materials was nevertheless permitted to present evidence to the grand jury — a "highly irregular" decision and "radical departure" for DOJ. He was the only witness at the GJ. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The 9% in the title is misleading. Applications often mean little. Many apply who are not realistic candidates. The key stat is a 17% decline in enrollment & that means a substantially greater decline at many universities and particular programs. This will be an existential threat to many programs.
