Being a British parent is so weird bc you're actually worried about paying the sky high rent/mortgage & getting GP appointments but the entire press keeps telling you you're worried there's a trans person or immigrant nearby & the vat on Eton means there'll only be two skiing holidays this year

I'm glad to see more positivity about the way we talk about film - or more sensitivity even with more critical takes. The world doesn't need more negativity, and I don't want to add to it.

Leaving some of that behind has even lost me people I thought were friends, but I think I'm a better person.
The one thing I'll say that's good out of all this nonsense is how the film community has really grown out of enjoying this kind of inter-personality sniping to become a body of positively, that just loves movies and the people who make them. The pushback against negativity is so refreshing in 2025.

2. This is an extremely small sample size in a house in Pompeii. And yet many headlines are universalizing in order to say ALL Roman slaves ate better than the freeborn. We know that this is absolutely not true.

Look at this Reuters headline:

it's cool how every day there's a news story about the CDC changing vaccine recommendations and it's right next to a news story about how a kid died from a disease that last killed in 1893 but any reporter that tries to connect the two gets fired by a venture capitalist for taking up ad space

Jesus Christ, if you’re a journalist, go and find out for yourself if the bridge was damaged. GenAI is making morons out of people.

I'm so tired man.

I need you cis people to understand this. Rachel Levine did everything right. Legal name change. Legal sex update. So professional and accomplished she got SENATE APPROVAL as an open trans woman.

There's nothing we can do that they won't ignore to hurt us. So don't let them.

We have yet more new preachers in town with a speaker set up opposite city hall. One of them preaching in his own language and a young lad translating for him in a kind of call and response rhythm.

Being trans disqualified you from being involved or having any say at all in the nyt coverage of trans people. That was true 5 years ago, and it’s true today.

It’s the definition of prejudice.
Ever wonder why the New York Times abandoned balance and impartiality to lead an old-fashioned newspaper crusade against trans equal rights?

In one of our most read stories for the year, @evanurquhart.bsky.social took readers behind the scenes at NYT.
