Just heard Drew Struzan passed away 😞 His incredible work has given me and countless others so much awe, joy and inspiration!

I had posters of his work as a teen, I began using color pencils because I thought he used them too. Always inspired by him. Just utterly heart broken.

RIP Drew Struzan.

Performatively reading in the cafe, but wearing white gloves so I'm still venerating the Book As Object, with a t-shirt saying "I know archivists don't wear gloves" so people know the gloves are performative.

It is truly weird to live in a time where "Companies should make a profit based on the difference between what people are willing to pay for their product and the cost of the time and resources needed to make it" feels like radical socialist thinking.

Dear Mr. Altman:

Unlike you, I make a product that turns a *profit.* That people pay *actual money* for. That doesn't have to be shoved into their web searches and office suites.

That encourages people to think with their own brains.

"[S]uch is apartheid that, like many whites, many blacks cannot imagine a life that would be neither a black man's life or a white man's life."
▫️Nadine Gordimer, 1959

Historical heartburn, anyone? Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose . . .
Extracts from "What is apartheid?" by Nadine Gordimer, published in HOLIDAY in 1959; republished in LIVING IN HOPE AND HISTORY: NOTES FROM OUR CENTURY (1999) and also in TELLING TIMES: WRITING AND LIVING 1950-2008 (2010)

"Hundreds of thousands of white South Africans are concerned only with holding on to white privilege. They believe
that they would rather die holding on to it than give up the smallest part; and I believe they would. They cannot imagine a life that would be neither their life, nor the black man's life, but
another life altogether. How can they imagine freedom, who for years have had to be so vigilant to keep it only to themselves?"

“That’s one gone!”, says a dad to me as he drops his son at nursery. “One more to go!” he says, pointing at his daughter sitting in the car. “Just need to get rid of the wife, and I’m sorted!“ he laughs, expecting me to laugh too, but to his surprise I smash him about the head with a ceremonial mace

I know this isn't applicable to everyone's situation, and yes, people can hurt you, but they can also heal you. Choose the direction of your effort, but don't refuse it outright.

And if those people love you, they will likely support you right back through your difficulties (which could be happening at the same time as theirs). All too often, withdrawing is something depression is telling you to do, and it's a filthy liar.

I think a lot of the (rightful) pushback is against giving too much of yourself to people who greatly harm you, just because of a sense of obligation. It shouldn't be about opting out of all sacrifice, unpleasant feelings or situations that result from supporting the people you love.

But if you want a good relationship with someone, you have to be open to giving and receiving freely, not only protecting yourself.

So, my therapist explained it like, you don't owe these things to anyone – this is a gift you give to them, so give it intentionally and in the right spirit.

Stuff like “you shouldn’t feel guilty canceling plans” morphed into something closer to “you should feel good canceling plans.” Stuff like “you should be able to cut toxic people out of your life” edged closer to “find reasons to see people as toxic enough to cut out of your life.”

Job occupations, from an 1881 census. Every one of these sounds like something a sorely provoked Captain Haddock would should at someone in times of heavy stress.
