NEW EPISODE!

Dave and I go in pursuit of a Santa serial killer in 80s London, but the real mystery is how many directors this film had.

Welcome to Don’t Open Til Christmas, where the content warning is longer than the transcript. One thing’s for sure, it slays!

THREAD.

My parents' cat Bridget vanished. As the weeks dragged on they became ever more worried, so to distract himself my dad began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up at some of art & music's most important moments.

I've collected his work here...

Dropping slightly later than advertised due to work being a bag of dicks yesterday. For our Christmas special we find an unwelcome gift left over from the 1980s at the very bottom of Santa's sack. It's Don't Open Till Christmas. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/e...

If I was being hard on myself I'd say the theme of my 2025 was 'Making the present not much fun due to an anxious yearning for a safe future.' But I suspect the truth is more along the lines of 'Ex-publishers took my money and almost trashed my career and I fought like fuck to not let it defeat me.'

cis people on the skyline are genuinely more distressed by karoline leavitt’s lip fillers than the fact that congress just said, “what we should do is put any doctor or pharmacist in prison who gives lifesaving medical care to this specific kind of child we find gross.”
Bluesky tonight is neatly divided between trans people and family members appropriately angry and freaking out and everyone else who has barely noticed.

"And Tiny Tim, who did not die" = heartwarming, Christmassy.

"And Tiny Tim, who would not die" = sinister, alarming.

Everyone thinks GHOSTBUSTERS is a libertarian fantasy about the triumph of business but it's actually a cautionary tale about how the 80s antipathy towards government & push for privatization results in dangerously incompetent bureaucrats & a private sector exploiting natural disasters for profit.

My favorite tyrant joke: a man comes every day and peers at the front page of the newspaper without buying it.

The newspaper vendor says, "what are you looking for?"
"An obituary."
"Obituaries aren't on the front page."
"This one will be."

When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

ICE shipped my kids to CECOT and I’m going to die because I followed the CDC recommendation to treat my pneumonia with ivermectin. But at least now there won’t be any black mermaids in the next Disney movie.

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

A jolly festive treat, Mark Gatiss and Ben Mansfield discuss this year's Ghost Story for Christmas, E.F. Benson's The Room in the Tower, which is rather smashing.

As of today, the only person in this Daily Penn visual that hasn't been fined millions of dollars or convicted of a felony is Luigi Mangione, believe it or not
