Writer on archive TV and film. Currently working on a book about the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas. Produced The Quatermass Experiment (2023) and Children of The Stone Tape (2024). Podcasts on Nigel Kneale and Giallo.
A superb episode which seemingly came from a tv series rather than begetting one. I wrote the accompanying essay for its release in the third volume of Play for Today sets from the BFI.
Play for Today - The Mayor's Charity (29th November 1977). Written by Henry Livings, directed by Mike Newell and starring Thora Hird, Frank Windsor, Roy Kinnear, Terence Rigby and Phil Davis.

This will only be bettered by the fans’ excuses.

God this is an interesting but depressing thread.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Now wanting the Ladybird Quatermass books… May have to write them first. “Victor is feeling ill. Poor Victor. Look out for that cactus!”

I’ll die on the hill of Ari Aster being a terrible filmmaker.
Ari Aster's ambitious riff on American right and leftwing politics is extremely familiar and barely enlightening

Best bit of The Running Man? When the audience made the bloke on his phone leave the auditorium.

Sadly that wasn’t in the film.

Just learned about Jack Shepherd. Hope in the Year Two, Bill Brand and *the* definitive Renfield.

Superb.

You know that Sophie Ellis-Bextor thing we did last year, that everyone really liked? Let’s do that again but much worse.

New episode time!

Dave and I take too many prescription drugs, settle into our trendy settee-cum-fireplace and look at porny photos of Susan Scott while discussing representations of female desire as only cis men can.

And then we talk about Luciano Ercoli’s first film…

Brexit left the UK divided societally, impoverished economically, and diminished internationally.

Farage, Johnson et al acted to undermine the nation state of the UK for their own (or other's) nefarious ends.

They should be hauled up for treason.

Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have £40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

Udo Kier - cinema’s fallen angel and an embodiment of the screen’s delicious power to corrupt - is gone. "I would live like the hero of Huysman's A Rebours,” he once told me. “Have no clocks, and hire two nuns to go by my window and pray at 12 o'clock each day."
