the subreddits for luxury watches are some of the darkest places on earth
Rolex subreddit post:

My uncle has Alzheimer's and is often forgetful of his possessions. One of them is a Rolex Submariner. Would I be justified in taking and caring for it as my own instead of having it left neglected and forgotten in his jewelry box? Thanks.

"Good news, everyone. We're going to try to stop it from getting you to kill yourself. Don't ask how. Also, you can fuck it. Don't ask why."

And the US is spending more on *that* than consumer spending. Every company relentlessly trying to cram *that* into their product. The government included.

Altman: the next update will *not* tell people to kill themselves in order to attain quantum resonance with god.

Everyone: yeah that'd be pretty nice

Altman: It will *not* tell people to murder their spouses.

Everyone: cool, good feature.

Altman: and you can fuck it

I would raise the Titanic from the bottom of the Atlantic and have it transported to the Pacific and dropped into the Challenger Deep

lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

TIL that the aggro af wasps you see in late summer are worker wasps who have finished their nest tasks and are all out seeking sweet stuff and raising hell for the locals with the last days of their lives while waiting to die, wasps are basically just the insect version of retired Brits in Spain

There are many really good points in this great column by @stephenkb.bsky.social but one of the most important will probably be overlooked.

One reason the successive Tory administrations from 2016 to 2024 achieved so little beyond damage control is that they traded middle-aged voters who needed little from the state for older voters who require rather more.

Charlie: when I was 7, my grandmother took me horse racing and ⅞ of the horses I bet on won!

Me: OK what was your secret

Charlie: I bet on only the horses who took a giant shit before the race. They were feeling free, unburden. They had to win.

me: ok let’s go to the horse races

the protagonist isn't always the hero. they are just the person the book is about. sometimes authors write books about people who are bad and it does not mean that the author is bad

The Catcher in the Rye is about a teenager struggling with the grief of losing his younger brother to cancer and it's strongly hinted that the narrator has been a victim of childhood molestation or worse and everyone who takes that story and turns it into "rich kid won't stop whining" is illiterate.

few ideas have damaged the average psyche more than ‘the customer is always right.’ it should be a little bit humiliating, being a customer. you should walk into any service transaction knowing that the other person, and not you, is in control over whether you get your treats

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way

Combining direct lighting - as Mark the Evangelist is demonstrating by using the illuminating dove - is great for targeted tasks and emphasizing details at your desk, while indirect lighting - see the open window - creates a warm and inviting environment. Bonus: your cat will like it. #catcontent

ALSO

nobody has said these things but it’s a pet peeve

It is a HELICO-PTER (spinning wing), not HELI-COPTER. People say “heli” and I always want to correct them and say “helico” but that’s why my therapist said I don’t have friends
