8th May 2025- TGOC25 Day 1: Shiel Bridge > Altbeithe
Distance: 22 Km
Walkers: Solo Weather: Cloudy. then Sunny.

Today's the day- the start of the Great Outdoors Challenge 2025.
I began by walking out of the Glen Shiel campsite towards Kintail hodge.
Here I met other Challengers having breakfast and signing before the start.

I carried on under a cloudy sky until I came to a woman sitting by the path. I needed a drink so I stopped beside her and she explained that she had walked the Affric Kintail Way but her boots were giving her grief so she was taking them off. She then walked away in her socks!

I walked to the private bothy and stopped for another drink before crossing the footbridge and beginning the walk uphill. As it got hotter I slowed down and the other Challengers passed me by.
It seemed to take hours to get to the plateux, where I stopped for a bite to eat before walking to the Camban bothy. I was tempted to stay but I still had a few kid to Alltbeithe, so I rested a while before continuing down really rough tracks to get to a burn about 1 Km from the hostel. I decided this was enough so pitched by Dave and had my first meal of the TGOC, then bed.

You do what some whizz kid has recently thought up - you charge people to jump the queue (I was patronisingly to that ‘GP’s are private enterprises’ when these buggers tried to advertise it on FB.

I was hoping to make apple butter, but after an hour’s cooking and a 2 week set it appears that I’ve just made 6 jars of apple sauce.
