i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

Love this Edward Gorey quote: "Anything that is art is presumably about some certain thing, but is really always about something else, and it’s no good having one without the other, because if you just have the something it is boring and if you just have the something else it’s irritating.”

This is also broadly true in Canada for provincial elections (but not federally, where regionalism is a more powerful force)
a tweet i saw that really opened my third eye said basically that there's no such thing as red states and blue states, there's just states where the big city/ies that everyone else hates are a big enough portion of the population to dominate politics and states where they aren't
I mean, this is the whole problem, isn't it? A party rooted in the liberal, cosmopolitan parts of the country can't win outside of them, but you also can't not have a party rooted in those regions because that's a huge and influential part of the country.

Hey Ontario. Please pay attention to this. It's fucking terrifying. As a renter I rely on rent control in order to, you know, LIVE, and this threatens to take it away from me and most people I know.

Write to your MPP. Call Ford's office. I don't even know what to think right now. Fuck Ford, man.
In particular, they want leases to no longer necessarily remain in effect indefinitely, so that landlords have more options for creating tenant turnover.

Hi. I wrote an essay about AI slop: How it feels like an invasive species for the internet. How its boosters describe building a future that’s devoid of craft. How frictionlessness can be nihilistic & how this stuff seems to leach part of our shared humanity out of the world. I hope you'll read it.
AI’s Invasive Species
The slop is winning.

Walking and dreaming -- what a great pair of topics to re-open with! Come see us!
Announcing the grand opening weekend of our new space at 263b Geary Avenue! November 1 and 2. Featuring author events on both days!

Toronto #nokings! From a show of hands, lots of US expats alongside fed-up Canadians. One (1) counterprotester, at a distance, rambling incoherently about seed oils and Jesus through a loudspeaker. Solid turnout, beautiful weather, very peaceful dance-party vibe

The ability to remove your post when a hostile account quote-tweets you is a great feature of Bluesky.

To do it, go to their quote-tweet of you, click on the three dots in the bottom right, then click “detach quote.”

It shows up as “removed by author.”

We have just been informed that the encampment at St Stephen's will be cleared TOMORROW (Thursday). If you can be here in support of the residents, please come. We anticipate that things will start around 9 am and probably go on for some time.
The summer is over and Sadhbh finished writing her long book! Just in time for spooky season!
