My mom has a thing where she believes there shouldn't be a clock in the dining room.

My parents host a lot, and often guests want to give gifts. Very often we have a guest who has the thought "you know what's missing? A clock in the dining room!"

There's a pile of clocks in my mom's garage.
It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"
Spike Lee just blessed Pope Leo with a custom Knicks jersey during his visit to the Vatican, just one week after the Pope was gifted a custom Chicago Bulls one.

A huge complaint I have seen about long covid by assholes is “it’s only (rainbow haired, queer, progressive etc) women bitching about it, so o know it’s not real.”

As usual, it’s misogyny.

To explain briefly: at the moment people successful in their asylum claims get permission to stay in the UK for 5 years, then have to apply for permanent residency. At that point a review of their status is done, but it’s rare not to succeed at that point unless they‘ve committed an offence 1/
To reiterate, this is about making life immeasurably more miserable and stressful for some of the most vulnerable people, in the almost certainly vain hope of winning over the votes of racists.

Anything more shabby and shameful is difficult to envisage.

What does this mean in practice? It means focusing on the choices made instead of on the dollar figures.

This can be difficult! it's not always clear cut. It may not be "a thing that needs doing won't be competently handled bc it went to the wrong company
An important thing many corruption stories get wrong is that what's stolen isn't "taxpayer money" it's collective governance

Less than a million spent to make this happen, too. Congressfolk are so fucking CHEAP I mean dang.
Congress’s shutdown deal eliminated key food safety rules, blocking agencies from enforcing measures to prevent contamination and trace outbreaks. This rollback has coincided with a surge in hospitalizations and deaths from foodborne illnesses.

authoritarian control of children to authoritarian control of all of society, the ones who are not abusing their power over children still think they are entitled to the power itself and are dedicated to preserving it
The unifying force of the disparate American fascist coalition is their fervent demand for increased rape and/or torture of children

They're just starting to say it out loud

It's really as simple as that

Fun fact: the USDA defines a sandwich "a meat or poultry filling between two slices of bread, a bun or a biscuit."

According to this definition, a pb&j or grilled cheese sandwich or *any* vegan sandwich is not a sandwich.

The USDA only considers it a sandwich if it's got meat.

the Democratic Party should have 2 major goals for the next time it holds power: (1) completely rebuild the destroyed federal government capacity, and (2) crush the GOP, which enabled so much corruption and immiseration. destroy their funding, jail their leaders, make it so a new party has to emerge

Fun (terrifying) fact: Moose are so gigantic, they don’t have any predators…except for orcas. In winter/scare months, moose will dive for vegetation and orcas will eat them!

Seriously, wtf is wrong with medicine that it tolerates this constant amateur-hour incompetence? We know this is killing people!

It matters past K-12 too. Graduate level classes are usually quite small. PhD education is, practically speaking, master-apprentice, ie 1:1.

But we still put students in 500person lecture halls for freshmen classes bc otherwise we would need to hire more faculty.

And we can’t afford that.
Exactly this.
One of the old-timers at the school I used to teach at (a k-8 building) used to say that he could predict low test scores and behavior problems simply by looking at the student-teacher ratios in kindergarten.

Class sizes matter when it comes to k-12 classrooms.
Every decade, we hear "the kids can't read or write!"

Interventions that don't work are proposed. Those that do work are ignored: reducing class sizes, making kids & families feel safe at school and welcome, becoming a community resource.

When their expensive reform fails, they yell at us again.

Yikes. Banning people for activities such as co-authorship and advising a graduate student is completely unreasonable in a modern research environment. And a retroactive 5 year ban is wildly unfair.

I remember a time where all the guardrails we had in place were not only there but we knew why not to remove them. Widespread gambling, liquor commercials, even prescription drugs used to not be able to be advertised. It's taking almost no time to learn AGAIN why they were banned.
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

porn is art and in particular the segregation of sexual imagery into its own isolated little corner diminishes both sides of the divide. the idea that it's something shameful and other is self-reinforcing.
There has been a noticeable reticence in left and liberal circles to voice full-throated support for pornography, even as it's become increasingly clear what the open end goals of the censorship movement are
In a lot of ways other leftists chose this path folks. They shrugged and didn’t care when Patreon banned a ton of hypnosis and TF creators, or when YouTube started their ASMR crackdown. Now it’s coming for queer porn creators, more and more. Who will stand up?
