Lauryn Hill just shared a moving tribute to the late D’Angelo:

People need reflection.

I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no
remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making
space during a time when no similar space really existed.
You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other. It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests. Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven. I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King. A photo of Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo, wearing black

The trick is to have this playing WAY before you start to give the Love Jones vibe. It's over 18 hours long so you can't go wrong.

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

It's the terrible use of AAVE while being racist towards Black people for me.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

I think the most. . . boiled down thought I've ever had about death came to me at 8 yrs old when I found out my cousin died.

At 8, all I could think was "I thought I would see her again."

And, I realize. . . that's really the whole thing.
33 years later, I'm sad that I really never saw her again

All the love you’re seeing for D’Angelo is what happens when you leave the world in a better place than how you found it.

He and his art will be missed.

He deserved to grow old. He deserved the space to be more creative and share more art w/ the world. He deserved to be adorned in praise while he was still able to receive it in the physical. Luckily, music and spirit is eternal.

RIP Michael Eugene Archer aka D'ANGELO. 🕊️

I can’t imagine dealing with your father having terminal cancer and your mother suddenly dying tragically before him.

Peace to their son.
