There needs to be a system to appeal medical records the same way you can with criminal records, because biased and fucked up medical records can fuck up your life just as much.

How To Recognize a Drug-Seeker

Read more cartoons! ---> #PoliCartoon
Help us make more! ----> patreon.com/barry
This cartoon has four panels. The cartoon is set in a doctor’s examining room – it has one of those tall examination tables with padding so patients can lie down, medical equipment and a degree hanging on walls, various cabinets, a sink. A tired-looking woman in a yellow tank top and black capri pants is sitting on the exam table. A doctor is standing in front of her. We can tell he’s a doctor because he’s wearing a white lab coat and has a stethoscope hanging around his neck. He’s holding a clipboard in one hand.

PANEL 1

The doctor is speaking to the patient. The patient is slumping a little, while the doctor is stiffly upright.

DOCTOR: Some people use narcotics to get high. So when you come here and say you’re in constant pain, that tells me you’re a lying drug-seeker.

PANEL 2

A closer shot of just the doctor as he speaks, looking stern and a bit angry, clutching the clipboard to near his chest.

DOCTOR: If you ask for pain meds, you’re a drug seeker.

DOCTOR: If you seem desperate, you’re a drug seeker.

DOCTOR: If you cry, you’re a drug-seeker.

PANEL 3

A close-up of the doctor’s face as he lectures, one forefinger raised.

DOCTOR: If you talk back to me, you’re a drug-seeker. If you don’t like me assuming you’re a drug-seeker, you’re a drug-seeker.

PANEL 4

A shot of the patient and doctor. The patient is now very wide-eyed, and leans back, away from the doctor. The doctor leans forward, hunching over his clipboard a bit as he makes a note.

PATIENT: Could I talk to a doctor who isn’t horrible?

DOCTOR: “Doctor-shopping.” Classic drug-seeker.

I think two things are true:

1. young republicans were always terrible and racist

2. young republicans become openly hitler-loving groypers is in fact a new and alarming development that is worth paying attention to

Abled people don't realize, because they don't go to the ER, that even having a stroke or cancer doesn't at all guarantee a doctor will try to figure out what is wrong.

There's a good chance they'll just be given some Tylenol and told to lose weight, rest, etc.

Black women get diagnosed with cancer on average almost a decade later than white women with the same symptoms.

Up until they finally get diagnosed, at a much later stage than white women with worse resulting prognosis, they are *routinely* brushed off.

The person who would keep your grandkid from dying in agonizing pain as an infant in 30 years is, right now, opening their text messages to find a 19 year old has fired the whole department that was in charge of funding them.

Like a fucked up It's a Wonderful Life.

The destruction of science in the US that has already happened is going to be at least century-long process of decay, affecting every single aspect of life. A mindbogglingly vast and complex act of repeatedly shooting oneself in the dick.

There’s a lot to be upset about, and I don’t advise putting your head in the sand, but it is really bad for your brain to be mad all the time on a purely physiological level.

If you possibly can, take time to put down the mad.

It will help you think more clearly and remember why you’re doing this.

Like, a local indie bakery might not make enough through their walk-in sales but they have an agreement with several local cafés and catering companies to provide x amount of pastries on y schedule... There must be something similar on the textile side of things.
merelydovely.bsky.social
I mean, she might! I don't know about local tailors per se, but I know local restaurants, local catering companies, local cafés and so on will have what amounts to purchasing agreements with equally local suppliers. IIRC it's the only way some small storefront businesses survive.
merelydovely.bsky.social
(Apologies, just realized this is referencing an "other person" from a totally different branch of this conversation, ignore that bit)
merelydovely.bsky.social
Your local tailor is practicing market economics while capitalists are doing capitalist economics.
merelydovely.bsky.social
It does, but it simultaneously also brings a lot more speculation and unsold product. The more you invest upfront, the more you have to make back to make it worthwhile. That was I think what the other person was trying to get at with discussion of profit margin and number of shirts sold.
merelydovely.bsky.social
I assume you know, but in case anyone reading this thread does not: ALL modern clothes (except pantyhose) are sewn by individuals using domestic-looking (but industrially strong) sewing machines. Bras are being singled out here because you can't even use a normal sewing machine on 80+% of a bra.
merelydovely.bsky.social
Retailers could be doing things differently but only if they had a really good reason. The two good reasons are "it's part of the brand to be US-made" and "legislation makes this the most in practical and financially optimal way to sell clothes"
merelydovely.bsky.social
And others have of course mentioned elsewhere that the more expensive something is to begin with, the more expensive it will be to advertise. Like, you wouldn't walk into a TJ Maxx and spend $90 on a button-down even if it seemed really nice, you know?
merelydovely.bsky.social
Overhead isn't 100% elastic though. Warehouse space for thirty thousand shirts is more expensive than space for ten hundred, but if you're only selling three hundred, you can't easily rent only half a room. Three tax accountants is more than one, but everybody needs at least one. And so on.
merelydovely.bsky.social
Of course $35 for labor on a *bespoke* shirt is rather low, but you get the idea. It costs less because you're buying it essentially right off the assembly line before it needs shipping and warehousing and advertising at multiple levels.
merelydovely.bsky.social
Most of the answer there is inherent in "local tailor" - that cuts out the retail overhead and the brand overhead, and she's presumably not warehousing much fabric either. $35 usd for CMT (labor) and $10 usd for fabric is a little under 40 euros, so she's charging you 30 euro for her own overhead.

As someone who recently got into sewing, it becomes very clear, very fast how unethical most pricing is for your average new garment. Most people would balk at the price if you actually paid workers fair wages.
dieworkwear.bsky.social
This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

In Blasphemous, your character is wearing a tall pointy hat called a capirote that actually exists irl

Notably, the KKK appropriated it *because* it was a Catholic symbol and they hated Catholics. They thought it was funny, a fun joke like calling each other wizards.
