Minimum parking requirements create financially insolvent land use patterns.

The two apartment buildings on the right generate six times more in property taxes than the big box store on the left, while occupying almost half the space!

“The vacated homes were substantially cheaper than the new units and spanned diverse locations and housing types.”

When people move into new housing developments, they free up space in older housing. This is good for housing affordability and availability.
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

visitors staying in a VRBO (sigh!) trying to figure out parking sign and asking "Where are we allowed to park (for free)?"

why are they expecting us to pay for them to store their vehicle? They should need to get a street parking permit to park overnight on the street.

Good news, balloonists. The City of Toronto is proposing an amendment to the parks bylaw that’ll remove specific restrictions on flying hot air balloons in parks. The city says the balloons are "outdated technology” but that sounds like a challenge to me. secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

Also on the chopping block from Toronto's parks bylaw: the longstanding rule against using “profane language” in parks. Also you will now be allowed to be boisterous, but not riotous.

fkn grossly hilarious that the general public feels this way about following basic traffic laws

- don't block intersections
- don't block bus lanes
- don't run the red lights
if you do, the cops will be after you!!

but this speaks to driving culture 😮‍💨

there’s a lot of talk of affordability when it comes to property taxes, but not for things the city does to make day-to-day life more affordable for everyone: transit, libraries, programming & grants.

Some of us warned against this, but the obsession with low taxes overwhelmed fiscal prudence.
Morse is up asking how badly council fucked itself by spending it's reserves to keep taxes low

Staff (paraphrased) we're pretty fucked, we need to charge taxes to start saving again, but also pay interest to on the money we borrowed to cover the cost of not having reserves.
