I was teaching a class yesterday on the 1984-85 miners' strike. Here's an extract from Kinnock's speech to the 1984 Labour Conference.

Whether you agree with him or not, it's a sustained argument for the parliamentary road to socialism.

Now we get single-sentence paragraphs on "national renewal".

Also recognize that this unambiguous use of the military to commit murder of helpless noncombatants as they fought for life is a direct reflection of the virulent white supremacy that has seized our government, where every Latino man is a gangbanger in a de facto state of war against White America

Fundamentally, the UK is a massive success story on integration and most of the anxiety around it from the right should be treated as in insincere concern trolling it actually is.

As @polphilpod.bsky.social said (roughly): he’s the captain of our side—the broadly cosmopolitan, broadly egalitarian one—and he’s chosen to throw the game while talking trash about our values.
I also don’t get it frankly. I struggle to understand the strong antipathy he provokes in the country and the “must defend him at all costs” among “retired lovers of conspiracy theory” on Bluesky dot com.

"The era of permanent protection is over"

Is this Labour government really saying it was wrong in principle to let these refugees of the last 75 years to stay, settle and become British - and they believe that should NEVER happen again in principle or practice?

It honestly does seem to me that Labour should raise income taxes, including on people like me. I am willing to pay my share if it means some hope of a functioning state that can achieve things rather than lurch perpetually from one crisis to another forever in damage mitigation mode.

every Democrat in the country should not only endorse Mamdani within three hours but they should denounce and condemn Andrew Cuomo and demand he retire from politics forever
So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."

I think Peston should apologise for this outrageous framing. Not a serious show that any of us should be going on until this kind of nonsense stops.
Is the Reform MP who says she’s driven mad by TV adverts full of Black & Asian people a racist or realist? How many migrants would the Tories expel? & should the UK be selling fighter jets to Türkiye?

A policy of expelling legally settled residents from overseas in the cause of "cultural coherence" is out-and-out, no pretences, racism. Waiting for Badenoch to admit as much.
Good news. But we should not forget this vile policy idea of Lam’s would have produced the largest deportation of legal migrants by any democracy since at least the Second World War. All to benefit a couple of MPs in a struggling party.
Are the Tories now rowing back on ILR?

Last week Badenoch's spokesman said Katie Lam's comments were "broadly in line" with the party's stance

Now a party spokesperson says it's “subject to an ongoing internal review” following a widespread backlash

In particular @bbclaurak.bsky.social could quote what Lam said very clearly in Parliament -that the Conservatives would kick out anyone now holding ILR who had ever claimed pension, child benefit or a host of other benefits.

Further to this - and once again I am doing the basic research that political journalists should have done six months ago - Lam said on the record in Parliament that this *does* apply to pensions/pensioners.

The Conservatives have drafted the legislation.

ANY one of the conditions being met leads to ILR being revoked.

If annual income falls below £38,700 for six months (for any reason at all)

The Secretary of State would also have the powers add whatever further conditions they want.

The Conservative Party cannot be considered a responsible party of government again until and unless Ms Lam is forced to drop her Idi Amin migration proposal and apologise to those it threatens, or has the whip removed. It is as simple as that.
Breaking promises made to people the government thinks unpopular, and saying bad luck with health or unemployment is as reprehensible as criminality, is bad not just for those facing deportation but for all of us who care about Britain as a country that believes in fair play, decency and honesty.
Lam says on air the policy is to remove those "because" they broke the rules/conditions under which they came

But her policy is to retrospectively change the rules/conditions under which they came!

Lam knows this will be perceived as unfair: she will feel "great personal sympathy" for deportees

I genuinely find this very worrying, as someone with settled status! sure, Lam probably won't be home secretary tomorrow, but the mood music is changing, you can feel it, and I just don't trust Labour to fight like hell on our behalf, so unclear where this is going to go
Lam hears "settled status" and "guaranteed by withdrawal treaty" as up for grabs:understood to be temporary "provisional arrangements" which can be transitional and unsettled if and when you want to

That is highly counterintuitive as language of 'settled', as law & as politics of Treaty guarantees.

Much of what he says is right! But it's like he's right without understanding why, just performing a simulacra of lowest-common-denominator left-wing talking points.

Nik Storonsky, the founder of Revolut, has left the UK and become tax resident in Dubai - escaping more than £3bn of UK tax.

Could we have stopped him leaving? Either with the carrot of a more competitive tax system, or the stick of an exit tax?

Some thoughts:
