If you don't approve of attempts to sanitize history on the US's 250th birthday but want to learn more about the founding era, the state of the field continues to innovate & there are new books coming out like John's on Washington, mine on migration & @gauthamrao.bsky.social's on policing slavery.
My book about how Americans have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated the history of George Washington and slavery over the past 250 years comes out in April. And Titus Kaphar’s art makes it the one of the coolest covers you’ll see next year. uncpress.org/978146969352...

Imagine rolling out a new line of cereal where boxes may randomly contain arsenic, razor bits, glass shards in them and the manufacturer wants the consumer to look before they eat. Except not all of these dangers would be visible to the naked eye. Then kids die and the company claims "improper use".

My most insufferable trait as someone from an African country is to perform flamboyant shock at how much you have to pay in cities like NY and London and not even a whole garden to kick a ball in!

it's interesting to project the chatgpt's style into the past -- read historical texts with an LLM detector.

What are its precursors? What are the linguistic registers on which it depends?

Back-cover publisher texts seems like one good candidate to me

as a related addendum to the post, the ethnonationalist mind is not well-suited to understanding or adequately coping with the kinds of problems that arise in complex social systems, ones in which retreat into homogeneity is structurally and functionally impossible
Every time a US veteran snaps people fall all over each other to point out the effects of war and literal physical changes that PTSD triggers, but one Afghan veteran snaps and we’re going to shut down immigration for all Afghans forever and I bet they’re working on revoking parole wholesale

“Vermeule resembled an American tourist rummaging through a European intellectual antiquities store, picking out a little natural law theory from Aquinas, some Roman materials from a dark corner at the back; he then resold the resulting bricolage under the label ‘classical’ …”

Incidentally I think that one of the issues with Rowling’s portrayal of the Wizarding World is that she’d like to do Tolkien level world building but she has approximately the same world building skills as CS Lewis (“I’m going to take these cool things and that dream, put them together, and stir!”)

Not to pat my profession on the back, for all of our problems, but I do think it's to the law's credit that every US bar association that reviewed Glass' application for a license went "fuuuuuuuuuuuck no."

Another hominin cousin! Nice toes!
The Burtele foot has been puzzling anthropologists for a while - but it looks like there was another australopith living around the same time as Lucy (A. afarensis) - 3.4 Myra - that liked climbing trees a lot more

my dissertation was about the history of Catholic converts in the US and every day something makes me remember how often I was told it was too niche
My dissertation turns 10 next month and I've been dipping in to see if there's anything in there worth pulling out and working with, and each chapter is effectively about a different emotional struggle that would be familiar today.

Really thrilled that my second book is now published! It explores the life of Tacfarinas, a C1st AD auxiliary soldier-deserter-bandit-rebel who came to lead a revolt against #Rome in NW Africa during the early reign of Tiberius. He is a truly fascinating figure in #Roman history! 🏺AncientBlueSky
