The Spanish public television has published the first audiovisual map showing the 6,000 mass graves from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the subsequent Francoist dictatorship (1939-1975). A testimony of what happens when fascism wins -something unknown in most of Europe.

inspired by this, I have done a free extract of this section of the book here. it is about understanding that *with all its problems* the BBC is as important for our intellectual health as the NHS is for our physical health:

Suzanne Moore, who would rather be locked up than pay her BBC licence fee because the BBC is too nice to trans people for her liking.

I genuinely think there is a case that anyone using an AI product of this kind should face a short prison sentence. It's vandalism, just like painting on a wall or smashing a bus stop.
And you don’t even need an actually good bit of tech, which “Objector” may or may not be, to do this! If you just ask the free version of any genAI to do something plausible it still louses up everyone else’s productivity to work out it is bollocks!
The automated problem factory!

Some guy who did this often even painted himself as Jesus Christ. You don’t hear much criticism of him, do you?

Funny they’re trying to say “machines can be conscious”, when they still insist animals are not.
Bahahahahaha The New York Times just printed an opinion piece declaring "AI is intelligent, so long as we redefine what intelligence means to include it. And soon AI will be conscious, because we'll just redefine consciousness too!"
Nothing means anything! Yay!

I once heard someone reply (to the usual right-wing attempt to naturalise tribalism) that the same applied to siblicide, so he owed us an explanation for his apparent avoidance of it.
people go on about the evolutionary roots of tribalism but it seems to me that, especially compared to other species, what’s most striking about humans is how crazily friendly they are towards strangers

Mamdani will force wealthy men to pay tithes to support almshouses which will shelter the destitute, and also to open their houses and give food freely to everyone in their area unable to work through age or illness or disability
Mamdani will gather a host of assemblymen and force King John to sign the Magna Carta, followed by a second round of the Oxford Provisions which will further limit the power of the Monarchy under Henry III. Will no-one think of these English Kings.
Mamdani will implement sumptuary law. Ladies will have to carefully measure how many ounces of gold are in their girdles, and wearing pearls on hats will be banned except for wives or courtesans of foreign mercenaries.

I did a study abroad in Greece in undergrad and a classics grad student chaperoned us; he has been an undergrad in Texas and told there, as he related once, that the best way to translate μέλλω + infinitive was "fixin' to". This was long before I thought to study Greek but it stuck with me

I am currently out of the philosophy department on parental leave. if this inquiry is about classes for next semester, please email the chair of the department. if your inquiry is about the nature or existence of the external world, please consult René Descartes' work
Just got the best out-of-office message I've ever seen from a fellow academic:
"I am currently away on leave. If this is an emergency... well, I doubt it. What could possibly be an emergency in my line of work?"

It’s come to this: ppl of decency, of all faiths, must rely on murderer & dismemberer of Jamal Khashoggi to obtain justice for Pals & real, meaningful peace. IDK how we parse this morally, but what better options are there? More genocide & forever war? It’s enough to want to live on deserted island…
