New on Struggle Session! We discuss why our politics look like pro wrestling and Jerry Springer. Ross Benes joins me to talk about this and his new book 1999: The Year Low Culture Conquered America and Kickstarted Our Bizarre Times.

"It is not reasonable to place any expectations on the broad back of the majority of society, but it is reasonable to pile everything the majority won’t do on the thin slice of disabled people who are carrying their own weight and attempting to carry everyone else’s as they drown."
juliadoubleday.bsky.social
People continue to call COVID advocates’ pleas for masking “unreasonable”.

Yet people who’ve already been disabled by COVID have no choice but to live with the “unreasonable” burdens of constant COVID safety.

My latest:

Beyond all reason
Long COVID patients are constantly harangued about our requests for COVID safety. Yet what we're asking for is far less than what we're called on to do to survive.

So you believe the Internet causes brain damage, but you don't believe that about COVID the virus shown to cause brain damage.
whstancil.bsky.social
This place is a completely deranged social environment that’s flash-frying the brains of people who want to be popular here, and is only defensible in comparison to its much-larger competitor, which is doing exactly the same thing but with considerably more Hitler

Everyone who can needs to wear one buddy. It would help if you researched this before commenting.

"It is not reasonable or in line with how we deal with other comparable risks."

You don't know enough about COVID to compare it to other risks.

"The marginal benefit of having all asymptomatic people mask indoors"

N95s are near perfect at stopping the virus.

"absent extremely high prevalence and no vaccine"

Prevelance is extremely high. Most people aren't vaccinated. Vaccinations do not stop spread or chronic symptoms.

I hesitate to elevate this comment—IME people aware of how uninformed it is are in the majority on Bsky—but worth observing that this coming from eg the NYT opinion page is part of why RFK has an opening to pretend to be better on Long Covid than liberals. They’ve made the bar that low.

Probably COVID related and, yes, system is awful. Look into Long Covid.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
Yes! There's a pandemic where a deadly airborne virus is spreading. If you don't mask you are killing people including the only person you care about, yourself.
joadsprocket.bsky.social
Do you want everyone in the US to wear a mask when in public for the foreseeable future?
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
"Long COVID" is contagious. There's evidence it can or passed through blood or like an STD.

But also, it's caused by COVID which is airborne. Wear a mask and stop the spread.

All I can add to the “we reject universal masking” discourse is that it’s not about masks. You aren’t rejecting universal masking, which never happened; you’re rejecting having to think about wearing a mask, and maybe feeling badly about thinking about masks. Can’t help you there.

Universal masking, which we tried for two hot seconds in America before people started throwing tantrums & posting up with their guns, is about the same kind of understanding ourselves as a collective we would actually need to counter fascism. You care about the community so you set a group norm.

Bad news: there is no such thing as Long COVID. If you have ever had COVID you still have COVID. You may be asymptomatic at the moment, but chronic symptoms will appear in time.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
You are going to drop dead while ranting about COVID forever.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
I honestly don't know anyone who takes COVID seriously who doesn't understand asymptomatic spread.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
I called the graphic dangerous because it is. Half of spread occurs in asymptomatic cases. Feel free to look it up.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
Why don't you research this yourself for a bit?
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
Awful and dangerous! You are most contagious when you aren't symptomatic.

I always wondered what it was like for scientists trying to pull the curtain down to expose AIDS or that tobacco causes cancer.

This is it. We’re living in truly wild times.
leslieleeiii.bsky.social
Hospitalization is down during the acute phase. COVID causes organ damage long term. Just look it up.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“We may be witnessing the emergence of a population-level acquired immune deficiency — not sexually transmitted, but airborne.”

That line isn’t from a tweet. It’s from a peer-reviewed paper in AJPM Focus (2025).

The framing “it’s unreasonable to ask me to mask” reminds me of climate change discussions - “it’s unreasonable to ask for net zero” etc - bc ppl think of the politics as more “real” than the science. Sometimes things are hard or unfair but reality and science don’t care

I’m very very tired of “living in fear” being lobbed at maskwearers by people who frequently say they can’t wear one because no one else around them is.

Living in fear is ignoring science and endangering lives and your own health because you’re terrified of not fitting in.
