The Afghan refugee accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., fought in the late days of the U.S. war there as part of a "Zero Unit," a paramilitary force that worked with the C.I.A., according to a person briefed on the investigation and an Afghan intelligence officer familiar with the matter. The units were known for their brutality and labeled "death squads" by human rights groups. The suspect, identified by federal officials as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, grew up in a village in the eastern province of Khost. A childhood friend, who asked to be identified only as Muhammad because he feared Taliban reprisals, said that Mr. Lakanwal had suffered from mental health issues and was disturbed by the casualties his unit had caused.

I once wrote someone trying to impress a new love some piecrust instructions and thought I'd share them here: The secret of good pie is: keep your heart warm but your butter cold. Ounces or grams, all that matters is a one-part-butter-to-three-parts-flour recipe (only a little more butter and a tiny bit less flour than that makes it easier to work and richer, so cheat with all your warm heart, because reality wants to be richer than the rules). About 1.5-2 cups of flour per pie, butter proportionate. Put the butter in the freezer for a while and then grate it, if you can get a grater. Otherwise chop it as small as you can with a knife or knives and mix it into the flour until the largest lump of cold butter is as small as a pea a princess would feel under her seventh mattress down. I always work it by hand. On the one hand, your hands emit warmth, so you better be fast, on the other, what better tool is there? Take some very, very icy ice water--pour about half a cup of water over lots of ice--and pour some of that that chilly, chilly water into a well in that mixture. Don't overwater; it's easier to add water than thicken a gummy piecrust mix. Mix until you have a flaky pastry that will fall apart a little but mostly hang together in balls of piecrust--you don't want it to get sticky. And you don't want to overwork your dough.
