My observation and experience: It's not a coincidence that this non-involvement was at the same time that women started to achieve parity in mid- to senior-ranks. Service work (e.g. involvement in governance) became the job of women, with the effect that fewer men took part.
Faculty didn't want to "play politics" and didn't get involved when outsourcing of University administration accelerated in the early-mid 2000s. And now that Faculty are starting to take notice of the problems, they're realizing administrations have COMPLETELY shut them out of decision-making.

"Sometimes I worry about a society shaped by superheroes rather than muppets" is a sentence I just found in my book draft.

If you have tenure and you aren’t standing up for your contingent faculty colleagues I don’t even know what you’re doing.
also given the risk involved in teaching, it’s fucked up that universities don’t want to pay tenure-line professors to take the risk by being the lead instructors for these courses

If the Venezuelan sailors were enemy combatants, then the 2nd strike is a war crime.

If the Venezuelan sailors weren’t enemy combatants, then both strikes are criminal murder.

It’s that simple.

It’s infuriating to me that I need to evaluate media to determine whether it’s AI generated now. The great “time saver” technology wastes incalculable time and energy for people who want to retain their grasp on reality

The greatest irony of this comment is that it's actually fossil fuel companies (and the governments they've captured) who are living in the past. The rest of the world is moving towards renewables, and all this multi-billion dollar fossil fuel infrastructure is going to be worthless stranded assets.
People who care about climate change are “dreaming nostalgically about the past.” - Minister Hodgson

Gotcha. That explains a lot.

This isn’t about protecting kids. It’s about protecting drivers from having to think about kids.

It‘s not great that the best gloss on Carney’s pipeline deal is that he’s either pulling a fast one on the premier of Alberta or on the people of Canada.

Democracies can’t function if citizens have to resort to guessing what their leaders are actually doing.

We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

The new rules will ban *all prayers in public.* That's a violation of religious liberty.

The restrictions on face coverings *also* seem to me seriously unjust— and even the paternalist justifications seems self-defeating if it leads to women simply being less able to leave the house.

And sports broadcasts remind us that TV tends to focus on the famous instead of the good
I am thankful for Tom Brady reminding us every game that you can be the best in the world at something and it does not necessarily translate in the slightest to anything else

Had a trigger memory today when Willow Creek's Global Leadership Summit came up. At the time I was similtaneously disturbed and gaslit by how much everyone loved it, but in retrospect, wow, was that ever theologically vapid, utterly demoralizing stuff.

DAZN and FUBO exemplify the enshittification of sports streaming. Every year we pay more for less.

We used to get commentary from the grounds and a halftime panel.

Today it's Martin Tyler muttering alone from home and a halftime loop that barely transcends a screensaver.
