Great piece here (and why AI regulation is one of my top three priorities). No surprise that Newsom caved to money, it’s why he should never be president.
CA governor Gavin Newsom vetoed both of the major AI bills on his desk that Silicon Valley meaningfully opposed—one making it illegal for bosses to use AI to fire workers with no oversight, one requiring chatbot sellers to ensure their products do not harm children before marketing to them.
Silicon Valley's capture of our political institutions is all but complete
The tech lobby kills off two key California AI bills, and why it matters. Plus: How Sam Altman played Hollywood with Sora 2, organized mass social media deletions, and more.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible

A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I

set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did

was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible

OK like I get why this might be hard for headline writers but at some point you need to point out you've written the same story like 18 times now with the same exact characters saying the same exact thing endlessly
Pete Hegseth, the U.S. defense secretary, warned Wednesday that the U.S. would “impose costs” on Russia if it failed to come to the table to secure peace with Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth offered unusually strong criticism of Russia, just as Ukraine seeks American Tomahawk missiles.

I think two things are true:

1. young republicans were always terrible and racist

2. young republicans become openly hitler-loving groypers is in fact a new and alarming development that is worth paying attention to

In a world where basic human rights, things as simple as a living wage or going to the doctor or just using the damn public restroom, are being sneeringly taken away, anyone who says they "don't follow politics" or the like is living in massive denial of what politics is and how it affects them.

A common theme of right wing politics is gravitating towards the overly simple and easy sounding solution, which actually does the opposite of what they want. Too many drugs? More drug enforcement. Has this ever worked? No. Will it ever work? No. Do voters understand why it doesn't work? Nope. 1/5

Still a lot of people that seemingly don’t know we’re all @secondwindgroup.com now making the best stuff we’ve ever made.

There’s literally nobody left working on video at the old site.

Just a dead brand being used for name recognition for gambling shit.

Anytime there is a flood in the continental US, it is the biggest story across all social media.

Apparently, the same as not true for a catastrophe in Alaska. There was a typhoon yesterday morning and much of western Alaska is now underwater with homes with people in them just floating away.

This is no more lawful than if Iran / North Korea / whoever blew up a couple American yachts in the Mediterranean for suspected drug trafficking. On the legal spectrum it sits in the middle of a Venn diagram between overt acts of military aggression, state-sponsored terrorism, and simple murder.

This is cool after the war on everything called “porn” by platforms and payment processors. A machine that stole all your words can generate and sell “erotica” but you can’t haaa
Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.
