When I was 12, I caught Iria: Zeiram the Animation on the Sci-Fi Channel’s Saturday anime block. To this day, I still don’t think I’ve seen a piece of media that inspired me creatively on this level since.

40 years ago today, Calvin and Hobbes made its debut in newspapers. It has shaped my life, my sense of humor, my artistic sensibilities, my tastes, my beliefs (especially in regards to artistic integrity), what I look for in a friend, and who I am as a person more so than any other work of fiction.

If I didn’t already have my copy, I’d jump on this. It’s big and unwieldily (I actually prefer reading the smaller C&H collections most of the time), but it’s glorious nonetheless. I took a bus to a neighboring city to a half price books that was having a sale about a decade ago to get mine.
