Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible
12 operations?
13
A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I
14
set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did
15
was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible
16
program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named
17|
Professor
I. I did that through a mutual friend
18
of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a
20
submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.
As a history buff I do think the kind of method techniques for immersing yourself as someone from a specific historical era are fascinating. Like there's an art to not just inhabiting a role, but the world that role takes place in.
Was Strasberg the one that asked actors to recall their actual trauma, which lead to some very real mental health issues, or was that Adler's?
Yes! Also, I can't track down where I heard this, but I heard another big misconception is people conflating "actors doing research and preparing for their role" with "The Method", when the latter is a more specific process that's not entirely the same thing.
Ooh yeah, like they literally had to rewrite the movie to work around his death - it's like a more tragic version of how Peter Sellers leaving the 1967 Casino Royale parody led them to redo the movie so it had multiple characters named "James Bond".

Here’s the thing, 99% of method actors aren’t cunts whilst in character, I’ve had a blast with method actors in character.

As Daniel Day Lewis said “if it interferes with other people’s work you’ve gone wrong”
Finding out that Jared Leto kept doing his method acting shit and insisted on staying in character on the set of Tron Ares and would only answer to the name of Ares is so funny, like making a big ass douche of yourself for the third Tron movie where you play “computer program that gains feelings”
Meanwhile Heath Ledger also did method for the Joker, but managed to not be a nuisance to anyone or himself (despite some annoyingly persistent claims that playing the Joker "destroyed him" or whatever).
Which... obviously really fucking sucks if people think genuine method acting is the same as "sending used condoms and dead rats to your fellow cast members". The real moral of the story there is that Jared Leto just sucks as a person and as an actor.
Part of me wonders if the problem is that our current perception of method acting is defined less by "incredible performances in classic films" and more "stupid antics", basically people now think of Jared Leto in Suicide Squad more as "method" than a Daniel Day-Lewis performance.

In celebration of Drew Struzan's life and work, go check his Facebook page gallery, where you will find tons of early concepts of many of his work, and details of his process.

A great thing about Struzan's Star Wars book covers was when his artwork continued across to the back cover. Here is an example where the back featured two "Preybird" starfighters, a ship which at the time I don't believe had any fully-rendered high quality artwork of it.
The full front and back cover to the Star Wars book "Specter of the Past," featuring a colorful, dark spacescape on the back and borders with two Preybird starfighters flying in front of planets and moons, and a collage of Luke, Leia, Han, and Borsk Fey'lya on the front cover in front of a celestial orange glow. A close up crop of just the section of the illustration with the two Preybird starfighters

Look at the wraparound artwork Struzan did for the Indiana Jones books in the early 90s, complete with hand-drawn titles and author blocks!

16 year old me would stand in a mall B. Dalton and could feel the thunder & hear the music with one of these books in my fat little white suburban hands.

imo this one really isn't part of the false nostalgia wave: the internet was genuinely way better before the social media consolidation
LINK ROT: 38% webpages that existed in 2013 were no longer available 10 years later.

Even among pages that existed in 2021, 22% no longer accessible just two years later. This is often because individual page was deleted or removed on otherwise functional website.

Many implications for knowledge 🧪

We wouldn’t have the Star Wars books we have without Carol Titelman and Lucy Wilson getting it started and keeping it running when it mattered the most in the early years.
Random fun fact of the day - women are the reason #StarWars #publishing exists. And the reason it has been so successful that it could endure as it has for so many decades.

(I'm an expert on this stuff)

That's already a great idea, but it's even better knowing that the composer of the original Tron film, Wendy Carlos, IS a trans woman herself.

🌹a canonical part of Tron is that the programs you make resemble you because man is made in God's image which logically means A LOT of programs are going to be hot girls made by eggs
the thing about the entire tron series is that the universe they're in doesn't have any lesbians.

see, thing is that they invented teleportation via USB peripheral, and that's in the original movie.

if lesbians had this we'd either take over or fuck each other to extinction.
