brief reintroduction thread:

hi, I'm Mark. I'm an ICU nurse. I used to be a very, very active poster on Twitter but 2020 ruined my ability to obsessively track daily news

maybe an unpopular opinion but I don’t care for the inflatable holiday decorations you see more and more these days. lazy, feel like cheating. the halloween ones aren’t spooky at all

few ideas have damaged the average psyche more than ‘the customer is always right.’ it should be a little bit humiliating, being a customer. you should walk into any service transaction knowing that the other person, and not you, is in control over whether you get your treats

Today I went to pick up my foster dog, Glizzy, after a weekend back at the shelter while I was away, and I walked in at the very moment a sweet retired nurse was filling out the paperwork to take him to his NEW HOME!!!

I have a vague theory that American literature often has the problem of being very rooted in times and places that just don't make much sense to modern readers, because our culture is so geographically diverse and changes so rapidly

If it wouldn’t be a good story if you told it in chronological order with a single narrator, it cannot be made a good story by jumping around in time and switching narrators every chapter

caught my vampire neighbor creeping through my front door. he claims my saying “for sure dude, we should definitely hang out sometime” the other night counts as an invitation, but I disagree. we’re on hold with the etiquette hotline

Am I just being a Puritan?

I think it’s bad enough that the MLB allows betting advertising in between innings, but putting up an ad with the betting line or whatever in a graphic on screen during play?

Given the prevalence of problem gambling it’s IMO inexcusable.

I love RPG shops. Going over to some dumpy looking peasant and being like “Here’s 50,000 gold pieces. I need a tome of necromancy, three scrolls of fireball, a potion of invisibility, a dagger, an axe, an amulet of feather fall, and no questions asked,” is such a mood.

One of the worst parts of this crop of billionaire ruling-class crybabies is how their money forces you to have to listen to their ideas, which sound like the kind of thing you’d hear on Thursday night at the DKE house. These guys are not smart.

A two page ad. The title reads "Finally, a computer information service you can't outgrow. No matter how hard you try." The left page depicts a shirt ("Shop. But don't drop..."), a striped fish ("Dive deep into aquarium lore..."), a red sports car ("Price a new Mustang..."), a satellite ("Learn how to monitor military satellites..."), a zither ("Find out just what the heck a zither is."), and a globe that shows the Americas twice ("Talk to twice as many people about parallel universes"). The right page depicts G. Washington ("Learn a sensible way to get the dollars to start a new business"), a PC network ("Find out why your PC won't talk to your LAN..."), a Visa stamp ("Find out how in the world to apply for a visa."), a phone handset ("Get the current phone number of your old friend from high school..."), a scuba diver ("Discover a good place to dive..."), and a salad ("Copy down a truly delicious tofu recipe."). The bottom of both pages is dense ad copy.
