The rate of return here is crazy: for a few hundred thousand dollars, this lab produces literally billions of oysters and supports a seafood industry worth hundreds of millions. And the Trump administration is just like "fuck all that, it's wasteful spending, you're fired"

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

Gen AI absolutely CAN go away.

The bubble will burst and nobody in their right mind will invest in it. Law suits will start eating into what little funds remain and the companies will continue making net losses.

No data centres? No gen AI.

You need money to feed those fires.

Do you remember that meme awhile back of the guy asking someone on the street "you have to choose between universal healthcare and trans rights," and the guy said "both, I reject your premise."

That's the kind of thing all of us need to get comfortable with. Rejecting the premise.
Why decline all these chances to defend feminism? Because to participate would be accepting the premise that our rights and humanity are up for debate in the first place.

Once you’ve conceded that it’s reasonable to ask whether women’s equality was a mistake, you’ve already lost.

- community activism
- climate activism (go clean some beaches with some awesome ppl!)
- poetry slams at your local cafe
- social events at your local queer cafe
- evening school

Exxon has a new plan to sell more fossil fuels: stick carbon capture on massive gas-fired power plants for AI and brand them as climate friendly.

Critics say that's a dangerous fiction.

Thrilled to have @emorwee.bsky.social as my editor on this one!

The oil giant claims it can eliminate more than 90 percent of emissions from gas-powered AI facilities. Critics say that’s nonsense.

genAI is STOLEN WORK. Using genAI in *any* capacity is trafficking in stolen work, supporting the plunder. Period. These facts aren't even denied by the AI companies, they just find ways to make that plunder seem benevolent. Using their product enables that lie. Stop enabling the theft of our work.
"we only use AI for coming up with ideas" no you don't. you use AI to come up with the a bland version of other people's ideas. there is currently NOBODY more replaceable than you

Generative AI is a poison that kills everything it touches all so people who are already rich get to be richer while you have to be poorer
We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

I've done tons of technical illustrations for scientists and engineers and if they're too proud to bust out a napkin or dry erase, they'll diagram it out in PowerPoint. It's just faster than explaining it.

Artists love doing redraws and if your foundational idea is good they'll elevate it.

wrong

I smack you with Claire Hummel's immaculate and detailed understanding of costume design, which she got by studying historical references, which made her strong, which you will not become by relying on AI
