Here's my counter argument: Do data centers have an environmental impact? Yes, in water, in energy, in ewaste. Arguing about the scale of that impact is fundamentally missing the point because it is an impact that would not be there at any scale if not for the extensive AI use...

My main takeaway from replies to my LLM post yesterday is that a lot of people are now tying a lot of their self worth and/or creative processes to a black box tool that’s either gonna crash out or go up in cost exponentially at a later point in the ‘disruptor’ playbook.

HEY friends: recently seen heaps of "disclosures" from AI companies of the energy cost per question you type into chatbots (most recently from Google)?

Presenting per-query 'efficiency' is part of big tech's efforts to hide its extremely real and happening-right-now climate impacts!

Big tech’s selective disclosure masks AI’s real climate impact
Google claims to have disclosed new information proving its own efficiency. But it has hidden the bigger picture. Guess what: I’ve got the bigger picture for you right here in this big old po…

Chat GPT is terrible for the environment, makes people dumber and runs on rampant plagiarism. But, it also refuses to recognize the existence of New South Wales so it's impossible to say if it's good or bad.
I asked for the app to generate a map
Of Australian states and territories with a ‘r’ in them. To be fair, despite announcing itself as ChatGPT 5, I suspect this is still 4.5.

We can protect national security and public safety — the reasons why ICE was created in the first place — while minimizing cruelty, especially to children.

Look who I saw yesterday: Fluffy escaped an emu farm and moved into the conservation area next door.

Now they occasionally pop out to say hello to mountain bikers or go for a jog with the local Parkrun group.

Rangers monitor them and report that they are healthy and happy.

Whether this is true or not is beside the point. The point is that anyone who didn't immediately condemn Israel should never be allowed to forget that they ran cover for a genocide and the murder of children.
I read the "Biden was old" book and the most heart breaking, infuriating revelation was that, in her refusal to appear disloyal (in large part bc the Biden team never trusted her) Harris swallowed her greatest differentiation from him:

That she vehemently opposed the handling of the Gazan siege.
COLBERT: You warned everyone…he would prosecute political enemies, cut Medicaid, alienate our allies, give tax cuts to the rich. I know you're not here to say 'I told you so' but would you like to?

HARRIS: You're correct. I did predict a lot of that. But what I did not predict was the capitulation.

Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.
“Wikipedia is this economic anomaly. In many ways, it’s sort of magical that people will just volunteer without explicit economic incentives to create artifacts that are meant to share knowledge with everyone in the world”

Today, our capital proudly marks seven years of London Trans+ Pride.
