There's two options here, and at least one of them is true: Either the stigmatization was never about respecting consent (less likely) or the people who partake in this accept that a machine is a non-sentient, unliving object instead of a creature.

Personal/regional experience makes a difference too. While the virtual pets came first in all regions to my knowledge, Digimon didn't really get POPULAR in America until Digimon Adventure, which leads to the feeling it's "an anime".

I'm beating the drum yet again, unfortunately. Electric is asking for us to pay off $250 more by the 15th, we're behind $400 on the rent, and if the government shutdown keeps up, we'll be even further behind since we can't rely on SNAP and SSI to help us keep afloat.
