I am not going to be playing C. Viper (I don't need to be pressing that many buttons to do stuff) but I fuck with the vision

I gotta be honest, this currently has around five more likes than I expected it to get

Tomorrow I start translating the next volume of one of my most demanding manga series, new characters drop in two fighting games I try to keep up with this week, three princesses remain unslain, and my stupid ass suddenly starts thinking about replaying BG3

I get it. If this is actually happening, we could use more of it. Hey chat check out this stick I found

Longtime Landmineheads may remember that I had much to say about the webcomic xkcd during the "I fucking love science!" years, and very little of it was kind. Let it be known that I have put the ire behind me and even chuckled a bit at "Up Goer Five." Hatched buried, Mr. Munroe. I have no enemies.

Understandable! It definitely pulls very few punches.
johnnylandmine.bsky.social
I hope that changes! My obvious bias aside, it's a great series if you like gnarly horror manga.

I've seen a few translators' answers, but this is the one that made me break into a cold sweat.

Uhhh while I have your attention, and presuming you are a horror manga enjoyer, please read 100 Ghost Stories That Will Lead to My Own Death by Anji Matono, available now from your manga retailer of choice

You got it! I probably should have back when I first posted, but better late than never, I guess.

Since this is going around again, I should probably elaborate! I can only speak for English, but I'm sure this applies to other languages, too: think of something about your language that makes writing a story like that tricky. Japanese either just plain doesn't have it, or can easily avoid it.

All this makes Japanese particularly well-suited for twist endings and gut-wrenching reveals, but it's not just horror, ofc. I'm still recovering from the bit in Bocchi the Rock! when Ikuyo's mom freaks out for several pages because she thinks that Ryou and Bocchi (two girls) are one boy

It's trivial, for example, to write a perfectly natural-sounding Japanese sentence that could be either "I remember how Johnny smiled when I brought them tea" or "I remember how you smiled when I brought you tea, Johnny" depending on context. Then you can flip that context switch later.
johnnylandmine.bsky.social
Pronouns are often load-bearing in English, while Japanese can avoid them with ease. Subjects are often left to context, while predicates stay the same, whether in first-, second-, or third-person. Repeatedly addressing someone directly by their name isn't as odd as it would be in English, either.

I'm in favor of it because it unlocks a new route for thing/thing, Japan posting

Wait, Goodman Games lost the Lankhmar license? I dunno how this usually works in RPGs, but if it means DCC Lankhmar is gonna get scarce, get it while you can if you think you'd ever want it. DCC Lankhmar may as well be DCC 2E as far as I'm concerned, and the city book alone is one of my favorites

Wait an A.B.A won Strive at Evo France? I don't say this often but LETS FUCKIN GOOO

I was gonna say Christmas Mom sounds like a made up show that would exist in Bojack Horseman but then I remembered they literally had Birthday Dad

(The match itself starts at four minutes in; the only thing you need to know is that in addition to normal wrestling rules, anyone who breaks the light tube loses. Despite the "deathmatch" in the title, there's no blood or anything like that.)
