Right, so, someone saying immigrants should have “A-level English” is someone who doesn’t know what the subject “English” is, which is learning to recognise and understand deeper meaning and symbolism in a text, to be able to analyse and deconstruct and get their own reading on a text

That's what they said. Now that doesn't mean people can't read, 9 year olds can read. It means their ability to answer comprehension questions showing their understanding and analysis of what they read is at that level.

I was at an event today where I heard that the average reading comprehension age in NI is 9. Now, I don't know the source. But if that's even close to true, it looks like the UK will need to start deporting its own.
