it's well established that the italian "ciao" comes from venice, where irish sailors with the ulster dialect would say "chifidh (ciao-fee) mé amarach thú" upon parting
but i've always wondered if "chifidh" itself has come from a partial reversal of the more common "feicfidh", like french verlan

absolutely massive news from the EU's top court! while it doesn't force every EU country to perform same-sex marriages, it *does* require them to recognise same-sex marriages from other countries the same way they recognise other foreign marriages
