Again, the Government's current crusade is against *successful* judicial reviews. Ones where they've been found to have broken the law. And now a Minister is calling ordinary people taking JRs "nasty."

This is a really nice piece in Hot Press about how we're differently to other businesses and why. It'd be great if you could read and share. My perhaps naive hope is that a big business might see it and copy us. It works. #speirgorm www.hotpress.com/lifestyle-sp...

I'm really enjoying all the Tom Stoppard bits, but also this. It's really hard to see how otherwise apparently perceptive and honorable people can be on the wrong side of this. And it matters so fucking much.

This is incredibly common.
This week I had a meeting with an amazing advocate who works with a local charity. They don't feel safe publicly criticising government failures because they're applying for government funding to do work the state is failing to do. #spéirgorm
Massively important thread!
The people who fundraise for local initiatives, like a hospice, are energetic, engaged, motivated, if they weren't busy with a local campaign imagine what else they could accomplish? I believe it's a SOP for politicians to keep 'keep them busy', to keep community-minded

Horrible story, and I hope those assholes are caught and dealt with

And while I certainly blame far right agitators, Facebook etc, and sleeveens like McGuirk/Gript for fomenting this kind of awful stuff, Simon Harris and others in government need to take a hard look at themselves and their rhetoric
Asylum seekers have told of how they were followed by men on motorcycles before being subjected to an alleged attack in rural Co Dublin yesterday.

The incident – which saw the young men beaten and their car windows smashed – has been condemned.

Something that was conveniently omitted in all the original news pieces.
Incredible bad faith mischaracterisation of this movement to rename Herzog Park. Like all Israel's presidents, Chaim Herzog, perpetrated apartheid and the ethnic cleansing and brutalisation of Palestinians.

Here’s RTE DG Kevin Bakhurst admitting to illegal work practices AND that RTE is insolvent. I published that podcast in Jan 2025. Since then RTE continues to use taxpayers money to drag workers they’ve wronged through a legal system to deny them what they are owed.

Great thread, and something that needs to be said louder and more frequently.

We are so dependent on charities to run essential care, from medical to housing, we are so dependent on volunteers to fundraise and run basic services, all of which our government should be providing.
We never talk about, when there is such a feel-good factor around such fundraising drives, and we marvel at the amounts raised, how the State should be fully funding many of these organisations to do this work. OR PROVIDING THESE SERVICES ITSELF. Because we have a right to public services.

Two things can be true at the same time: Israel is a rogue state engaged in genocide, and antisemitism is real and thriving. And because of the latter it's understandable that Ireland's small but proud and storied Jewish community might be feeling particularly sensitive right now

Charity can work for once-off infrastructure, but you’re right it’s no replacement for SYSTEMIC funding. TS funded a successful pilot prog for families with pre-school/early ed children with special needs but it hasn’t won Govt support, so the year it doesn’t get Toy Show funding, it could be gone.

Evergreen thread. Charity is a failure of government. Sure there are good arguments for local interventions to address community need - by the council. Cancer research, needy children, women’s refuges? All essentials that we already pay tax for. Governments are good at the dark arts of funding.
🧵 As we look towards the #LateLateToyShow next week, it's time to remember that everyone - including the State - will expect us all to donate generously to the very worthy causes supported financially by the Toy Show Appeal. Let's think about this.
