The "hire EU workers" part could be appealing tho(?)

Because Weiss, like basically all RW parallel institution building efforts, is entirely output-concerned. She doesn't want to do the research and investigation work of journalism to gather information and then take an editorial line on it, she just wants the editorial line.

i have also never seen any evidence that weiss is interested in, you know, actual *news*. she’s a gadfly interested in commentary (and commentary about commentary), and that’s a deeply saturated market

Here is an enduring challenge in my field, foreign policy. For decades, there was a broad and bipartisan consensus of US foreign policy abroad, within which presidents would vary. Things like "treaties will be honored" and "basing commitments will last as agreed to by our predecessor", predictable.

Rocked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Beijing’s support for Moscow, a wildly unbalanced trading picture and a diplomatic dynamic where the European side feels it's ignored by Beijing, Porter said it was “hard to disagree” with the suggestion that ties were at an all-time low

Indeed. The issue is not "Jews are white and Palestinians are brown" the issue is the state of Israel, defined constitutionally as a Jewish state in its political, legal, and social character is as a result explicitly exclusionary and creates 2nd and 3rd tiers of life. It is racial, just arbitrary.

What it means is quite literally that you can, in fact, find people of physical traits you wouldn't expect in almost every ethnic group in the world. There are Saudis who are natural blondes and Finns whose grandparents were all born there who are remarkably swarthy. It just happens.

A lot of this is downstream of the misperception that the Palestinians are the intransigent ones here but the exchange of captives is the easy part. The problem in every previous ceasefire has been getting Netanyahu to not kill Palestinians once he gets what he wants.

What the Twitter takeover did so effectively was fracture the way we get our news. If, for example, I want to get in-depth updates on Sudan I still check in with Twitter as that's where a lot of the biggest accounts are. There's no one-stop shop anymore.

If you've never been to Gaza, you won't appreciate what the yellow line means. Basically Israel now holds most of Gaza's small but important agricultural land. Continued Israeli occupation, which I judge the likely outcome, makes Gaza even more unliveable and more dependent on outside goods.

Gaza Strip: Israeli army has withdrawn to the 'yellow line'

AFP Infographic with map of the Gaza Strip showing the 'yellow line' where the Israeli army has withdrawn its forces as of October 10, according to US envoy Steve Witkoff

Well I didn't know the origin of the meme and that's what I thought about seeing it🙌🏻 just wanted to add my explanation to the conversation. Anyway you're right about the demographics, my bad

Speaking of food, I've read of Israeli branding things like falafels or other foods typical of Palestine (and the region more broadly) as Israeli, to both look like they have a traditional presence in the area (which mostly is not the case) and eclipse Palestinian culture

I didn't even think about checking your profile there! Thank you, your review is pretty cool! I am still uncertain if it's a movie for me but I really liked the final part of your comment

Reminder of what Salvini was doing 11 years ago: visiting Crimea to support Russian annexation of the region and encourage Italian businesses to invest there.

This also makes more abundance of sense once one also seriously examines what the political bureau of Hamas has repeated vis a vis disarmament, they wish to disarm only in the context of a Palestinian state being established with an army and police force. They think Barghouti would facilitate this.

something quite brain-melting about the hard right's position apparently now being "we hate all Muslims and distrust Muslim states, aside from that one Muslim place that still has slavery because that sounds fun"

Bangkok's Grand Central Post Office, completed in 1940, an amazing example of Thai-style Neoclassical architecture
A brick and mortal building in the Neo-Classical style with two Garuda statues on top A cast iron door in blue and gold with Thai Art deco motifs A large white post office room with a chandelier A giant art deco bas relief done in the style of a postage stamp with a man on a horse

A slightly overlooked thing is that this was and remains a colonial war with a global audience. Unlike other colonial wars, where the mutual discovery of deeper hatred than either suspected is limited to combatants, the mutual discovery here occurred even among non-combatants.

it was obvious from the moment the attack happened that this was not only a tragedy for Israel but was going to become a tragedy for Palestine, and I still remember who was cheering it on.

If you were online on October 7, 2023, this is no surprise.

Overshadowed by the fact that Israel retaliated with a genocidal war is the reality that amid the attack seemingly professional/moral people spent days praising every report they found of Israelis, including children, being murdered.
