The NSS is like a version of the Eisenhower Doctrine written by the KKK. A commitment to intervene aggressively abroad (especially in Europe) to uphold white supremacy and foreclose the emergence of multi-ethnic democracy. Its a declaration of political race war from a gang of white supremacists.
I can’t help thinking that when, in future, people ask what UK political leaders said as it became undeniable that US saw European liberal democracy as its no1 strategic foe, Starmer and others will regret that the answer is “not much, shuffled awkwardly, looked at their feet”.

We seem to be lying to our voters that nothing unusual is happening, both in the hope that we can flatter snd manipulate Trump not to do what he repeatedly says he wants to, and to avoid distancing from the mythical persuadable UK Trump fan.

Britain's influence at a European level is already greatly diminished, ofc.

We failed to negotiate any returns agreements before exiting the EU, and the latest attempts to claw our way back are seen as desperate.

When I was in Brussels last month I visited the Council of Europe.

They told me UK's proposals to change the ECHR are nothing new. There has long been a coalition of nations, led by Meloni, to reinterpret the convention.

Everyone accepts it needs updating, they don't need to be told by Britain.

What I ask every time when I talk to British officials is:

What are you able and willing to do without the US ?

Because that is the no. 1 question on my mind looking at the UK from the Nordic-Baltic region, where faith in the UK is perhaps even a bit unrealistically strong.
I agree. I understand the urge to keep trying to stop Trump doing more harm to UK interests, but Starmer & other European leaders need an honest conversation with voters about the effect of US abandonment on our security, & what we now need to do to protect ourselves.
I can’t help thinking that when, in future, people ask what UK political leaders said as it became undeniable that US saw European liberal democracy as its no1 strategic foe, Starmer and others will regret that the answer is “not much, shuffled awkwardly, looked at their feet”.

Starmer/ Downing Street had one job to do yesterday. Stand up for a senior British Asian elected official from their own party. (Support for British and European democratic values would have been nice too). Their abject failure in that moment should be disqualifying.

A huge night for Democrats:

—They flip Miami's mayorship.
—They flip a state House district in Georgia that had voted Trump by 13%.
—They keep Albuquerque's mayorship, while the liberal faction flips city council.
—And they get big overperformances (+18 & +22) in 2 Florida specials.

It's tempting to separate Trump's awful racism re Europe from security issues. But the issues converge. A Europe that isn't white enough for Trump isn't a Europe he thinks he needs to listen to on Ukraine, Nato etc. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
