this is not how the law works at all. He wasn't being charged with "intending to throw a sandwich at a fed," he was charged with a specific federal crime which has multiple elements, and if the government fails on any one element, they lose.
straight-up jury nullification. this guy did it, confessed to it, and the jury instructions explicitly said that if he did it intentionally, it was assault.

This story is so utterly bewildering to me, I wonder if this is another one of those southern things. Like what else would you call your dad's cousin who is older than you besides "aunt" or "auntie"??? Half the people I called aunt or uncle growing up weren't even related to me at all!
