The survey is open to non-members (I am not one) and to readers (who here is not &c.) so I encourage you to share your feelings on the matter. Don't assume that everyone already understands that AI is bad or why! I mean, people *should*, but you could say that about a lot of things.
SFWA members and general SFF community:

In this press release, our Board of Directors apologizes for recent events.

Feedback from writers is strongly welcomed in the survey.

mentioned in this thread but over the past couple years I have taken to sending people delivery gift cards when things are going on -- as thread notes, takes off burden of cooking but also requires very little coordination (i.e. not intrusive) and works remotely
A friend had a death in his family & our other friends wanted to do something for him but weren't sure what. My advice was to not say "let us know if we can do anything" having been in a similar situation. The person is overwhelmed. Don't put the burden on them. Instead tell them what you can do 1/

Get hard copies. Especially of queer art, books, music, films. We’ve got to be archivists whether we want to be or not. I’m not going to see more things I love burn.

Friend, let's find out together by watching this PSA.

DO NOT look at these photos on your phone, it will protect you from the full experience.

I've got it open on my laptop now, and it's like staring straight into the screaming heart of a supernova made entirely of home decor warehouse contents.

My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

Yes! The future is not already settled. In fact, actual serious people (not tech bros or acolytes) are majorly calling into question every aspect of "AI" on a deep level. I compiled 18 pages worth of links to help resist "AI is inevitable" propaganda: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

This episode of #Watson is about a pandemic thawing out of the permafrost and barely anybody is masking. Watson’s surgical mask isn’t fully unfolded. One of the patients took his mask off for his intake. I’m going to have a stroke.

Also on "well isn't *spell checking* AI???" smug arguments: Every spell checker on every software I use to write has gotten worse and stupid as more and more ML features have been added. It literally cannot do better than a simple strict check for words not in a dictionary.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

more power to any Dean who makes the case that their discipline-specific standard for AI is refusal, and AI refusal will be what they integrate into the curriculum
It's hard to overstate how impossible this demand is from Purdue's administration to implement these AI requirements by next fall. We are nowhere close to understanding what AI proficiency means or what it looks like in education.

Heartbreaking and horrifying to go to bed reading about the mass shooting at Brown University and wake up to read about the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach. Thinking of the victims, their loved ones, and those affected by the hate that drove these attacks.

It’s weird how there’s always moves to make fiction more “interactive” with different endings etc. It’s like these people have never seen the same film twice a few years apart and had a completely different reaction. All fiction is interactive. That there’s an audience is the interactive part.

Placeholders are supposed to be crude MSPaint drawings made with 0 effort by a programmer! They're supposed to look like dogshit because then you know to replace them!
Sorry I think using AI for placeholders is also bad
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know you only care about finished art but placeholder art also needs to be made by a human being who also needs to be paid for that

But placeholder midjourney slop cuts that artist out
