I had a breakthrough in the start of November and I was so pumped to finally do things again but then I immediately went on to spend the second half of November sleepy and sleeping. I've been oversleeping to an embarassing degree.

Finally figured out how to unclutter my Bandcamp app's following feed so that it properly shows me all the latest releases from artists I follow. Turns out I had to go on the website and unfollow all genre categories. Anyway. Currently listening to:

Exciting news! Shuhei's previous game, Raindrop Sprinters, is fantastic and of course it's great to hear that Daisuke Amaya (Cave Story, Kero Blaster) is involved as graphic artist and advisor. Looking forward to it!

that AO3 study which indicated that the stuff people looked for was like the stuff they'd seen before, but the stuff they liked the most was stuff that was at least a bit different
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

my “AI is over” anecdote is that my wife was hired over the summer to write scripts for a big tech company explaining how to use their AI tools and after many rounds of revisions, the latest notes said “we’re finding a lot of AI fatigue among our users” and to remove all references to AI
Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?
Execs are embracing AI more than their employees are, new research suggests
Research from HR software company Dayforce suggests that executives are leaning into AI far more than their employees.

LucasArts had so many internal tools, but to make levels their FPS games "Dark Forces" and "Outlaws" they just used the good old AutoCAD. Here are shots of "Outlaws" maps being worked on in AutoCAD R13 for Windows:

I think the audience for big-budget AAA military shooters probably aren't and wouldn't be interested in indie FPS anyway, but it's a damn good jumping off point to talk about those cool indie FPS titles anyway. Dominic's rattled off a load of neat looking games, so go have a look and check em out!
I really hate how Call Of Duty just sucks the oxygen out of the room. So, the campaign in the annual corporate franchise sucks this year? There's been more words written about that than probably EVERY OTHER FPS RELEASED THIS YEAR COMBINED.

And there have been so goddamn many, and so many great ones

The original Let It Die was famous for its absolutely amazing soundtrack. Akira Yamaoka went and got in touch with a HUNDRED of his favourite indie bands and commissioned each to do a track named 'let it die'. The result was borderline mystical.

They're AI-generating the music here.

Fuck that.
The Let it Die sequel - Let it Die: Inferno - which is coming out next week (4th December), seems to have been built using a considerable amount of generative AI. https://bit.ly/4ol7lIA

Okay, yeah, Death In Abyss is great. I am VERY bad at it (I've yet to get an end-of-level ranking above Weak) but it's a properly intense arcade game.

The Devil Daggers and Star Fox influences are clear in the regular stages, but bosses are undeniably inspired by Omega Boost's boss-orbiting stages.
