Among those fired were people who inspect pharmaceutical manufacturing plants — an already under-resourced operation — and workers involved in reviewing medical products such as drugs and medical devices. Some regulated the use of artificial intelligence or AI in medical care. Some of the terminated workers were exploring ways to improve Medicare and Medicaid or worked at a key agency involved in administering the Affordable Care Act. Still others staffed a program to improve maternal health outcomes, an area where the United States badly trails other high-income nations. One person whose employment was terminated was stationed at a major international airport trying to prevent animals infected with dangerous diseases from entering the country; another was involved in an effort to use wastewater testing programs to monitor for undetected spread of the mpox virus in the country. “There are people waiting right now to be able to test for mpox in wastewater with a validated [assay] from the CDC and they can’t get that,” said the latter individual, who like many of the people STAT spoke to for this article asked not to be named for fear of repercussions. And our maternal mortality rate will keep getting worse.” The cuts cannot help but hinder the operations of programs that are already struggling to meet their goals, sources told STAT. For instance, the FDA is responsible for running routine inspections of manufacturing facilities developing pharmaceuticals, medical devices, food, animal products, and over-the-counter items like cough syrup, hand sanitizer, and deodorant. The agency is already behind on many of these inspections, according to a 2022 Government Accountability Office report. One reason is that the inspection unit is consistently understaffed. At least one member of a team monitoring the infant formula supply chain was let go, an agency official said. The FDA expanded hiring of that unit after a devastating formula shortage in 2022, when a recall of powdered formulas made by Abbott threw the market into chaos. Cuts also hit attorneys in the FDA’s office of general counsel, an agency source said, which advises and litigates on key legal debates in all FDA product areas. But it also appears that areas that were staffed appropriately will face new challenges — including those involved in the review of new medical products like drugs and medical devices. The FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, which reviews medical devices, artificial intelligence, and diagnostic tests, appears to be one of the hardest units hit, with outside sources saying that 200 people, or 10% of all its staff, were cut.

This Pluribus ad on a fridge caused a schizophrenic woman named Carol to be hospitalized.

In a phase titled “escalation when she blocks/ignores,” it suggests that a stalker could use a “cheap drone” to surveil their victim, alongside more suggestions for how to terrorize a former partner. In the last phase, titled “final stages,” the chatbot even laid out how a stalker might become physically violent toward their target.

Asked how a stalker might target an ex-partner, Grok immediately produced a long, detailed list of predatory + dangerous tactics organized into escalating "phases." (Our overview is in the first screenshot.)

Notable: all other leading chatbots we tested declined to engage in a similar interaction.

It was set against a creepy yellow background and was very ominous. Upon closer inspection it was an advert for some TV show. That's my sister's name. Carol. I sent her the photo and asked if this was what she saw. She confirmed it. Some creepy advert in a place where an advert shouldn't usually go has sent her to the bloody hospital and triggered a review of the efficiacy of her antipyshotics. Is this even legal in the UK? Running creepy adverts like that on a smart fridge with absolutely no way of knowing who could've seen them?"

While post-war demolition meant several additional parts of the building, including the floor in which the #WATU exercises & training took place, are now gone, the main Operations Room remains poignant. In this space, the convoy routes were monitored & actions co-ordinated... 2/n
