The highest calling of journalism isn’t to tell two sides of a story.

The highest calling of journalism is to tell the truth.

And acting like a stenographer is a betrayal of your audience.
Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

This is probably the least appetising Thanksgiving meal I've seen.

I've never actually eaten a Thanksgiving dinner, but I've seen many that made me want to receive an invite. This is very much not one (and the company would be terrible here too)
Karoline Leavitt's Thanksgiving spread. Please dissect.

For context, these were due to be published in March 2025. The NZ govt prevented their publication because they intended to ban puberty blockers and the guidelines show they are safe, effective, and standard care internationally. Today they were released in an OIA putting them in the public domain.
In some good news, today PATHA has finally been able to release the 2025 Guidelines for Gender Affirming Care in Aotearoa New Zealand. You can read them here: patha.nz/resources-an...

Controversial opinion (maybe?) — I actually like airline food.

I mean I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it, but it's always been pretty decent.

Philippine Airlines was the best I've had.

This is a fascinating video. It's from a US perspective, obviously, but the vibe is similar for NZ.

I'd love to see one adapted for NZ... @robbienicol.bsky.social?

Can’t think of a better advertisement for @nebula.tv than the fact that the top video on the platform is FD Signifier’s essay on Charlie Kirk, which just got taken down on YouTube, even though YouTube had reviewed that much more censored version of the video and approved it.

Boards Chair here - before our BOT passed a motion affirming our commitment to Te Tiriti, I received emails from parents and teachers urging the board on.

The union never said a word.

Amazing that reaffirming a commitment to Te Tiriti is viewed as "anti-govt" (his words)

National Guard soldiers didn't sign up to be deployed as local police indefinitely as part of someone else's political stunt.

They're not set up to be local police, they never should have been deployed.

I got my ear (singular) pierced when I was about 14.

It was ESSENTIAL that it just be the one ear and it has to be the correct (left) ear otherwise it was absolutely a bold sign I was gay. Only basic stud or sleeper were allowed also, of course.

Just one of many social landmines of boyhood.
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

Most independent book stores took five copies of my book, or fewer.

If they sold most of that stock within a few months they'd likely re-order but after that they probably wouldn't bother to restock.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.
