Remembering the board member at the guide dog school who was a big deal at some kind of General Mills skunkworks food lab and who was always bringing us black budget treats and, once, a small fleet of late model Mac Minis that never stopped smelling like garlic bread

This is like how my university have made an "AI skunkworks" and have to put an asterisk next to the term in their marketing materials because nobody knows what it means

15 years ago I has no idea I was days away from spending my evenings performance tuning Al Jazeera’s blog server. The site was the one of the few places to get reliable information from on the ground in English.

The blog server was a skunkworks beta project. It blew up during the Arab spring. 1/6

The biggest thing I think for tech as an industry is it means a lot of skunkworks stuff can be done much cheaper/faster, many early stage VCs probably don't even need anyone with a CS degree to get off the ground; "hackathons" can get more ambitious, etc.

Enterprise stuff is still a bit tougher.

“"In an interview with InsideEVs, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the automaker's crucial "skunkworks" electric vehicle platform project is progressing well. He likened it to the Apollo missions of the 1960s and '70s."

It’s only such a heavy lift because Farley incinerated $22B over last half decade 🤷🏼
Ford CEO Jim Farley gives InsideEVs a progress report on its Universal EV Platform, starting with a $30,000 truck.

"A uniquely American, high-risk project... It's one of the most challenging projects I've ever been involved in."

Ford CEO Jim Farley tells InsideEVs that making its Universal EV Platform, starting with a $30,000 truck, is as tough as developing an F1 power unit.

New post just out:

"Troubleshooters"

How fixing the many small frustrations - that make up most of our interactions with the state - can give people faith in goverment's ability to make things work.

And help create a different Whitehall culture.

I like that you think someone designs these things. Yammer was skunkworks and has drifted into becoming "Viva Engage" which is kind of sort of the CX layer of M365 now, but not really and still has a lot of Yammer dangly bits. And Viva isn't either of the 2025 iterations of Teams, either.

I'm at the point of a project where we change from cute code/skunkworks names to proper public names, which are boring and I can't remember them 😂

Reading this story on Ford's skunkworks to re-invent their manufacturing process for EVs. Most of Ford's sales are outside the US where it faces intense competition from Chinese carmakers. Ford & other legacy carmakers have to adapt or die, Trump notwithstanding. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/11/b...

"We need a skunkworks to make innovative EVs!"

Meanwhile, the reason China's eating everyone's lunch is because they're making cars people can afford.

Ford announced a big pivot away from once-ambitious EV plans yesterday. Now, it's resting its hopes on a secretive "skunkworks" project.

It has to work, or Ford's warnings about China's EV takeover will come true.

They are deep in shit
Their existing EVs were created in secret because they hate EVs, they managed to make them bad and unprofitable so now canned them and again hope a skunkworks can magic something up

When China has millions of people working hard on the latest EVs

Jim knows they are cooked
