I think about this Ursula K. Leguin quote a lot lately: "We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable - but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings."

Disney lost me with this movie in a lot of ways. It was so mean spirited to Last Jedi. And as LeGuin wrote about commodified fantasy:
"Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes...."
"Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes...."
This film irrevocably hurt my relationship with storytelling & I'm not kidding or being dramatic. It not only broke my love for Star Wars but also my trust in stories in general. I never even knew they could disappointed so much & I'm terrified of it happening again

On my way home from World Fantasy, I stopped by the LeGuin map exhibit at the AA Gallery. Gorgeous and strange, as much meditation space as museum display. I spent a long time contemplating stones and the flows that shape them.

Well, I now think everything I liked in this book about trauma or the unconscious was basically an accident. Almost Harry Potter levels of “I get why past-me liked this, but it’s sloppy and kinda racist”.
At least it reminded me SFF authors who Get It exist. Time to read some LeGuin and Gene Wolfe.

Stories and chapters from: Ursula K LeGuin, Miranda July, Tony Tulathimutte, Torrey Peters, and Carmen Maria Machado. All great choices! Which is why I’ve read so many of them already 🤓

I find this whole thread of “WELL LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS RANDOM OUT OF CONTEXT QUOTE IS WRONG ACTUALLY” is weirdly aggressive when of course LeGuin literally wrote. A whole book about these very concepts.

I always think Earthsea if you’re a fantasy fan, Left Hand of Darkness if you prefer scifi, and The Dispossessed if you’re only going to read one LeGuin novel.

Maybe “piece” rather than “essay”, but still. LeGuin is brilliant here.

That's a fair cop regarding the LeGuin quote; I don't think there aren't people out there doing that, but I do think it's a rarity.
That said; I'm not convinced on capitalism's longevity. We will see; and by "we" I mean people about 500 some-ot years from now.

my favorite book is "the dispossessed" by ursula k. leguin and it's a science fiction novel about the survival of an anarchist society on a meager moon/planet #NotAloneTalk

Always worth remembering how that LeGuin quote continues
"We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable - but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.

I think maybe we undersell fiction and storytelling as tools to get us out of some of the jams we’re in.

One of the best books I read this year is by Korean author Bora Chung . This collection is filled with science fiction but is considered "literature," not sure if she is team Leguin or Atwood on the SF or not debate but this is great stuff.
