For over five years I have personally witnessed Zohran Mamdani and NYC DSA's consistent pattern of prioritizing optics and political theater over genuine Palestinian solidarity, often sidelining the grassroots organizers doing the real work.

Here's the timeline I've experienced firsthand over the past 5+ years. 2019: NYC DSA invited me to speak at a church in Queens about Palestinian organizing. After backlash, I was canceled and they claimed it was rescheduled but was never invited back. Grassroots voices were erased in favor of optics.

2021: I was photographed next to Mamdani at a rally. Zionists have repeatedly used that image to claim he is my comrade. The reality was different: I barely wanted him to speak at that rally, and it was laughable to see his chants focus on BDS instead of supporting resistance for Palestine. That year made clear the disconnect between political performance and actual movement building. He wanted our co-sign and involvement in things he organized but didn't want to support our initiatives.

2023: Mamdani introduced the "Not on Our Dime" bill, which mirrored a grassroots campaign Palestinian organizations including WOL had been running for over two years targeting settler-linked charities funding colonization in Palestine. We had: Mapped settler charity operations block by block in NYC

Organized dozens of events, actions and demonstrations

Educated thousands of people

Built real momentum for shutting down settler-colonial funding

Yet when the bill was introduced, the grassroots organizers who built the movement were excluded. I emailed Mamdani's team, asking why we were cut out and offering him a chance to support Palestinian organizations under attack by Zionists, including campaigns demanding that settler-linked charities lose their 501(c)3 status, something Letitia James could act on immediately. Fast forward to 2025, we are witnessing political theater with just yesterday, Mamdani holding a rally with Letitia James speaking, while the measures his bill demanded remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the grassroots who made the campaign possible continue to face harassment, doxxing, and repression from Zionist groups, the City Council, and even federal authorities.

This pattern is clear: co-opting grassroots campaigns, performing solidarity for optics, and leaving the people doing the actual work marginalized. Mamdani's public stances on Palestine have shifted depending on audience and optics, while grassroots organizers continue to take real risks for resistance and justice in Palestine. The lesson is simple: true Palestinian solidarity isn't photo-ops or legislative gestures. It's defending the people on the frontlines, amplifying grassroots work, and holding political figures accountable to the communities doing the actual labor. Movements succeed when the grassroots are supported, not erased.
