Parliament approves 90% emissions cut

11h

The European Parliament adopted a 2040 climate target to cut greenhouse gas emissions 90% from 1990 levels, while allowing flexibility critics say creates a loophole.

"There may come a time when the people elected to enact laws decide the modest benefits of regulating greenhouse gases outweigh the considerable economic costs." What a shocking thing to write. The Post is unrecognizable now. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
Opinion | EPA is right to reverse Obama overreach
If the federal government wants to more heavily regulate greenhouse gas emissions, Congress needs to pass a new law.

The key Atlantic current that could change Europe’s climate forever
Western Europe could face winters as cold as Canada because of the impact of climate change on a key Atlantic current, known as the AMOC, which helps regulate our weather.

THERE'S NO MEANINGFUL US CLIMATE REGULATION TO WIPE OUT

look I want my government to acknowledge CO2 bad too but this is not a massive deregulatory victory or whatever
Pretty good summary of the forces arrayed against the CO2 endangerment finding. I think they are counting their chickens prematurely.

1. Will EPA contest the science of climate change, relying on the report by five climate contrarians that has been discredited by the National Academies of Sciences, bit.ly/4aFW7uy, and others, written by a committee that the federal court held was improperly formed, bit.ly/4qofhd5 ?

The press is reporting that EPA is about to withdraw the endangerment finding, the legal basis for EPA regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. As I wrote in September, bit.ly/401lLUw, this would raise a tangle of legal issues. Among them: 🧵

As Waxman-Markey embodied, specific federal legislation targeting anthropogenic climate-changing emissions would have been a much more direct way to go (and may yet be).

The wierdness of the current European Parliament, however, means that on the same day a hardening of migration laws is adopted with the help of the far-right, a broad majority of the centre plus the Greens adopt a progressive climate law, against the far-right:
C’est une victoire !
Le Parlement européen vient d’adopter la loi climat, fruit d’une large coalition, des Verts à la droite rationnelle, unie autour d’un objectif commun : répondre à l’urgence climatique et assumer la responsabilité historique de l’Europe.

This headline should anger everyone as the largest CO2 polluter is set to solidify its position as such and torpedo efforts to cut emissions.

We are racing through 1.5ºC of heating and will likely cross 2ºC in the late 2030's at current heating rates.

This is a crime against all life on earth!
